Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is forced to sleep in the attic as punishment for misbehaving the night before his family’s trip to Paris. But when the McCallisters accidentally head to the airport without Kevin, the plucky eight-year-old realizes he’s got the home to himself over the holidays. However, two thugs (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) have plans to rob the house, and it’s up to Kevin to stop them.

Mixed reviews from critics at the time didn’t stop Replica Luxury Handbag Alone from becoming a holiday juggernaut. This beloved Christmas film is jam-packed with hilarious slapstick humor, anchored by all-timer comedic performances from Pesci, Stern, Catherine O’ Hara and, of course, a scene-stealing lead turn from Culkin.

To surprise his son on Christmas, a struggling inventor purchases a curious little creature from a Chinatown antique shop. The man gifts his son, Billy (Zach Galligan), a mogwai and informs him of important rules for caring for it. Of course, these rules get accidentally broken, and all hell breaks loose when little Gizmo the Mogwai sprouts evil gremlins that wreak havoc all over town.

The madcap comic energy of Joe Dante’s direction, memorable score from Jerry Goldsmith and impressive practical effects have all helped to cement Gremlins as one of the greatest Christmas horror films of all time. It helps that Gremlins was shot in the backlot of Universal Studios, which included part of the same set used in It’s a Wonderful Life.

Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) just wants to give his family the perfect, good old-fashioned Christmas, complete with a real tree — except the tree ends up needing to be completely uprooted from the ground. And that’s only just the start of the chaos that ensues for the Griswolds, which escalates upon the arrival of Clark’s wife, Ellen’s (Beverly D’Angelo) redneck cousin and her family.

The final film in the National Lampoon series to involve director John HughesNational Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a hilarious comedy showcase for legend Chevy Chase and features plenty of goofs, shenanigans and holiday cheer to satisfy the whole family.

Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point follows the vast Balsano family Christmas in Long Island in the mid-2000s, taking a look at the relationships between the four adult children of a widowed matriarch and their own children. The shaggy, collage-like narrative offers a window into the dynamics of an American family during the holidays, punctuated by two peripheral police officers played by Michael Cera and Gregg Turkington.

Watching Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point feels like cozying up next to a Christmas tree under a warm blanket. The care and detail on display is absolutely mesmerising, as the film indulges in the spirit of the holiday while exploring the unique displays of love, connection and frustration of a multi-generational family.

Abby (Kristen Stewart) has big plans to propose to her girlfriend, Harper (Mackenzie Davis) in front of Harper’s family over Christmas. However, when she gets there, she realizes that Harper isn’t out to her family yet. Partly based on director Clea DuVall’s own experiences, the movie chronicles Harper as she struggles to come out to her conservative parents — but first, she has to pretend to be straight.

Happiest Season broke ground in being the first lesbian Christmas romantic comedy to be produced by a major Hollywood studio, but it’s also a warm, funny film in its own right. The movie has plenty of Holiday cheer, heartfelt performances and a feel-good message, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy.

Howard Langston (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has been an absent father with his work as a mattress salesman always coming first, so he decides to make it up to his son, Jamie (Jake Lloyd) and his wife Liz (Rita Wilson) by promising to get Jamie this season’s hottest toy. But it’s Christmas Eve, and the toy is virtually sold out everywhere. With the clock ticking, Howard finds himself doing whatever it takes to be the best dad ever.

A humorous take on Christmas consumerism, Jingle All the Way wasn’t so hot with critics in 1996, but it has nevertheless endured as a holiday staple. Part of that enduring charm is the total absurdity of Austrian actor Schwarzenegger playing an all-American dad at the whims of comic hijinks.

When divorced dad Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) accidentally kills Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, he and his son (Eric Lloyd) get on Santa’s abandoned sleigh and journey to the North Pole. There, an elf explains that Scott is obligated to become the new Santa by the next Christmas. At first believing the events to be a hallucination, over the next year, Scott starts to realize that perhaps he does have a new job to do.

Easy to watch, silly and imbued with plenty of Christmas spirit, The Santa Claus is nostalgic fare for many Millennials who grew up with it. Tim Allen’s performance as the reluctant new Kris Kringle is memorable, as is the genuinely absurd and morbid premise that kicks off the rest of the ultimately sweet and feel-good film.
