‘On the Basis of Sex’ (2018)
This biopic of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg tells the inspiring story from her time as an attorney, during which she proved that a man had been discriminated against on the basis of his gender — flipping the script of typical gender roles and creating a landmark precedent for women everywhere.
Felicity Jones brings a calm and powerful intelligence to the role of RBG, and the whole movie feels like a celebration of her remarkable life. On the Basis of Sex is a stirring reminder that justice and equality are rarely freely given — and that it’s important to take every opportunity to fight for them.
‘I Am Mother’ (2019)
This sci-fi thriller takes place in a post-apocalyptic bunker, where an unnamed Daughter (Clara Rugaard) has been raised by a robot called Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne). Daughter lives confined to the bunker, learning from Mother about ethics, science and the extinction event that destroyed most of humanity. But when Daughter encounters a Woman (Hilary Swank) from outside the bunker, her entire worldview is turned upside down.
Despite its three-person cast, the scope of I Am Mother feels ambitious and grand, creating a sci-fi story that’s suspenseful and challenging. The film also raises provocative questions about morality, trust and what it means to be human — making it ideal for viewers who want substance with their suspense.
‘Bad Words’ (2014)
Jason Bateman’s debut film as a director, Bad Words, is an over-the-top raunchy comedy that’s a perfect match for his dry wit. Bateman also stars as Guy Trillby, a misanthropic middle school dropout who finds a loophole that allows him to enter a competitive spelling bee (because he never passed eighth grade). Seemingly there just to infuriate people, Guy unwillingly bonds with a lonely boy, Chaitanya Chopra (Rohan Chand), and begins teaching him the ways of the world.
Perhaps not surprisingly given its title, Bad Words borders on offensive from time to time, but there’s a warm heart buried under all that nastiness — and Bateman is the perfect actor and director to bring it out. Also featuring performances from Kathryn Hahn and Allison Janney, Bad Words is a hilarious little comedy that spells F-U-N for all involved.
