In February 2026, authorities in North Carolina made a surprising announcement that took social media by storm: a missing mother — who had last been seen by her husband and children in late 2001 — was located alive and well. Police are not saying just where they found Michele Hundley Smith, honoring the woman’s wishes.
The discovery of the missing mom has created more questions than it has provided answers, given Smith’s seeming reluctance to come forward to discuss the decision she made more than 24 years ago. So far, one of the only relatives to comment on the clearing of Michele’s missing person’s case is her daughter, Amanda Smith.
Here’s what you need to know about this fascinating and mysterious case.
When Did Michele Hundley Smith Disappear?
Authorities have said Michele Hundley Smith was last seen on December 9, 2001, as she left her home in Eden, North Carolina, to do some Christmas shopping a few miles away in Virginia. But Michele, then 38, never returned, leaving behind her husband and their three kids.
Michele’s loved ones filed a formal missing person’s report for the missing mom, and “an extensive investigation was immediately launched,” police said in a statement released over the weekend.
In a Facebook post written by Amanda on February 22, 2026, she wrote about how her father has faced small-town scrutiny over the years, with people even insinuating he had killed her.
“Where we live [is] a small town, there were many [people] acting as if they just knew he was involved,” Amanda wrote. “Well, he wasn’t! Of course, I never thought he was. Even when I would ponder it for a second, [because] I pondered so many different scenarios. I always knew that there was no way that he could do something like that for many reasons and the biggest being [because] my father could never continue to lie to us for decades.”
When Was Michele Hundley Smith Found?
Michele was found safe and sound on February 20, 2026, after the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigations Division “received new information regarding Michele Hundley Smith and her disappearance.”
A statement from police said that “detectives immediately followed up on the lead and began further investigative efforts.” In time, two detectives approached the missing mom and confirmed it was her.

Michele asked police to keep her location a secret — even from her confused kids.
“I am ecstatic, I am pissed, I am heartbroken, I am all over the map,” Amanda wrote about how she’s feeling now to know her mom is alive. “Will I have a relationship once more with my mom? Honestly, I can’t answer that [because] I don’t even know. My initial reaction would be yes absolutely but then I think of all the hurt. But even then, my mom is only human just as we all are.”
Why Did Michele Hundley Smith Leave?
If Michele explained her reasons for leaving back in 2001 to the two detectives who found her, it appears that, too, will be a closely guarded secret. The police statement makes no mention of what prompted her to leave, leading to loads of speculation — and criticism — on social media.
People who’ve learned of Michele’s story have blasted her for leaving her children — and letting them think the worst for years. Other folks have urged people to withhold judgement, noting she obviously had her reasons.
“I want it [make] clear that while their marriage had issues (just as many marriages go through) that my mom did not leave simply [because] of a bad marriage,” Amanda insisted in her post. “Everyone is entitled their opinions but please remember that my father has been proven innocent. My dad is a great man.”
“Both my dad and my mom deserve to have their choices and their feelings respected as well,” she added.
What Has Her Family Said?
Amanda isn’t the only member of the family to break their silence.
Michele’s cousin, Barbara Byrd, told WFMY that her “biggest question is … what happened all those years ago in December? What made you leave? What happened? I understand and respect that she doesn’t want any of us to contact her. I’m not angry.”
Byrd said she was relieved to learn Michele is alive.
“The biggest answer I had today was she was alive. Nothing else matters right at this moment,” she said.
“Please remember that each one of us have made mistakes in life, each one of us has hurt other souls [whether] intentional or not,” Amanda wrote in her post. “Please remember that each one of us has done things that we are not proud of. Life is too short to throw so much hate towards another [because] what is that hate going to accomplish?”
Amanda said the rest of her family —including Michele’s two other children — are entitled to their feelings. “They can choose to forgive and forget, they can choose to forgive and not forget, they can choose to forget but not forgive or they can choose to neither forget nor forgive,” she wrote. “It is their choice and I would appreciate it if everyone out there will respect their decision no matter whether they agree or disagree.”
