A California man has been charged with the March 8 kidnapping of two UCLA students he allegedly held captive inside his car, as well as the sexual assault of a third woman during a separate incident, according to authorities.
The UCLA Police Department said in a Tuesday, March 24, news release that there may be other victims of Alexander Schecter, who “is not believed to be affiliated” with UCLA.
Detectives with the university’s police department first arrested Schecter, 24, of Santa Monica, on March 12 on charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment in connection with the alleged abduction days earlier, according to police.
Early that morning, a suspect later identified as Schecter had “prevented” two female UCLA students from leaving his car while they were being dropped off, police said.
He is accused of threatening them with violence.
“Fearing for their safety, the victims remained in the vehicle as the suspect drove approximately half a mile,” police said.
Following Schecter’s arrest in connection with the incident, he was detained in jail and released after posting bail, according to authorities.
As detectives continued to investigate Schecter, they linked him to a sexual assault that unfolded in Los Angeles a few months ago, between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on October 12, 2025, according to police.
Schecter is accused of sexually assaulting a woman who is not connected to UCLA on that day, police said.
“The UCLA Police Department assumed primary investigative responsibility, confirmed the assault, and developed probable cause for Schecter’s arrest on the additional charges,” police said in the release.
Schecter was arrested at his home on March 20 in relation to the assault, according to police. He was booked in jail, where he had his bail set at $600,000.
It was not immediately clear whether Schecter had retained an attorney who could comment on his behalf as of Wednesday, March 25.
Schecter is facing charges of one count of rape by force, one count of forcible oral copulation, one count of robbery, one count of extortion, and one count of battery, police said.
He is now out of custody after posting bail, according to records viewed by KTTV.
“Detectives believe there may be additional unreported incidents involving Schecter and are urging any potential victims to come forward,” the UCLA Police Department said.
The department encourages anyone with information related to Schecter to call the UCLA Police Department Investigations Division at (310) 825-9371.
