Hashim Pew, the son of Storage Wars: Miami star Kevin Pew, was arrested and charged with first degree murder after Janel Hamilton was found dead on Tuesday, Oct. 13, according to CBS Miami.
The Sun Sentinel reports Hamilton was staying with her godmother, Hashim’s mother, in the Pew family’s Pembroke Pines, Fla., home, where Hashim also lived. The family had gathered that night to watch Storage Wars: Miami together. The arrest report obtained by Miami’s Local 10 News noted that Hamilton, 19, had gone to another room to get a blanket when the family heard the gunshot.
According to the police report obtained by TMZ, the reality personality tackled his 23-year-old son, wrestled the firearm out of his hands, and kept him restrained until police arrived.
Law enforcement told the Sun Sentinel that they recovered a .45 caliber semiautomatic gun that they believe Hashim used. The firearm was identified as one that was stolen during a car burglary in 2008.
Hamilton’s family told the paper that they don’t know why this tragedy occurred.
“She was so intelligent and so brave, a happy, pleasant, loving girl and I just can’t understand why this had to happen,” Verion McGann, Hamilton’s great aunt, told the Sun Sentinel. “They have no motive. There were no issues, no nothing.”
