Chanel confirmed that today that Blazy will be the next Creative Director of Chanel.

In case you’ve missed it, the fashion world has been all abuzz for the last six months wondering who will replace Virginie Viard as the Creative Director at Chanel. Multiple names surfaced over time, with the rumor mill working overtime to name an ever-revolving list of frontrunners including Hedi Slimane, Marc Jacobs, Simon Jacquemus, Daniel Roseberry, John Galliano, Sarah Burton, and more.

Most recently, though, Matthieu Blazy, the designer who reinvigorated Bottega Veneta for a new generation, has evolved to be seen as Chanel’s choice. In the last two weeks, Puck’s Lauren Sherman has repeatedly written that it was all but settled, according to her sources. At Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show this month in Hangzhou, China, its President of Fashion Bruno Pavlovsky told media that an announcement would be made soon, with others reporting that it would occur on December 16, and that there were matters to work out first.

Earlier today, Bottega Veneta (a Kering-owned company and sister to Gucci) announced that Blazy is leaving the brand, and will be replaced by Sarah Trotter (presently of Carven) in January.

Barely an hour later, Chanel announced that Blazy will indeed assume the title of Artistic Director and report directly to Pavlovsky. Blazy officially joins Chanel in April 2025 and his first show is expected in October 2025.
