From the red carpet to the streets, these New Yorkers have mastered the art of Big Apple style. Meet Luxury Handbag Shopping’s honored celebs including Lily Aldridge, Jamie Chung and Adriana Lima!
Occupation: Original series, seasons one and two available on Netflix
Taryn Manning ("Pennsatucky"): "In under ten words, I'd describe my style as casual, sporty, funky, colorful, youthful, skater, street, hippy, chic. I do like to shop. I bought a bunch of amazing stuff from Century 21 here. I had never been. I bought so many gowns and shoes, Galliano to Alberta Ferretti, for 75 percent off! My mind was so blown that words cannot describe the feeling."
Occupation: actress; What the Chung? blogger
"New York style is fearless. The city embodies self-expression through fashion and allows it to thrive. For me, that's dressing that's mix-matched, high-lows, laid-back, statement, accessories, fun—and not always comfortable. Something I love is my new Elizabeth and James Cynnie Sling woven tassel backpack. The print is a bit soho and it comes with a fringed tassel, which I think is on trend for fall."
Occupation: model; actress; face of Maybelline
"Whether it's a glamorous gown or a good pair of jeans, it must be comfortable or otherwise it's not fun to wear. I really look to the classic Hollywood women for style — Ava Gardner and Sophia Loren are two that definitely come to mind. On the other side of the spectrum, I love Rihanna's style because it pushes the boundaries but perfectly relays her personality."
Occupation: actor, currently reprising his role as the Emcee in Broadway's Cabaret, Eli Gold in The Good Wife; author of upcoming memoir Not My Father's Son out October 7
"I think the great thing about New York style is that it's emblematic of why people want to live here. You can be the person you want to be and you'll always find others who completely understand you. When I go out with some crazy outfit on, I do expect attention, but it's usually people saying encouraging and fun things about the spirit it takes to be different. I really admire people who have a look and stick with it, like Liza Minnelli or Snoop Dogg."
Occupations: E! reality show stars, Eric & Jessie: Game On; Jessie, country singer; Eric, wide receiver, New York Jets
Jessie: "Does Dolly Parton sleep on her back? Of course I like to shop! I'm always after clothes that are sexy, effortless, edgy, sleek and boho chic. I love flannel jeans and cutoffs, just the down-home southern part of me, and 60s pin-up icons, like Raquel Welch and Claudia Cardinale."
Eric: "I like to shop when my wife picks out the clothes for me and gives me options, rather than having to do it for myself! I just bought a pair of black-on-black aviators from Ray-Ban. They are badass!"
Occupation: co-anchor of NBC's Today
"I have to admit, I do like to shop. If it's been a hard day, I find that a quick trip to a store can pick up my mood considerably. I like hats and I wear a lot of them. I love to see what's new and come out with something that forces me to push the envelope a little bit. I think right now a guy who's an icon of style is Pharrell Williams. Unfortunately I'm about 30 years too old to try it, but I admire him for experimenting and setting trends."
Occupation: fashion designer
"I ride a bike and scooter around town so I try to keep it casual most days—sporty and pretty. I wear a lot of leggings, originally inspired by our wetsuits in a million prints. They're perfect with sneakers for travel or at night with a sexy top. Anything goes in New York. I just got new eyewear with pink-tinted lenses. They make the whole world rose-colored!'"
Occupation: Victoria's Secret model; designer Lily Aldridge for Velvet
"I get so inspired just walking down the street in NYC. I like to dress in a way that's classic, effortless and rock and roll. Kate Moss is my fashion icon. She wears things so effortlessly and can make anything look cool without trying too hard. I also love Audrey Hepburn's classic style."
Occupation: dancer (soloist), American Ballet Theater
"When I'm not dancing, I feel like I am constantly in heels. I'm only 5'2" so I'm very comfortable in heels. Nicole Richie is very petite like I am, and I just think the choices she makes with her clothing never overpower her. They complement her frame and her funkiness. I also love Joan Crawford and I love the styling of gowns that were made for her in so many films. There's something a little bit masculine about some of the stuff she wears, but she's such a woman and in control."
Occupation: Project Runway host and executive producer; America's Got Talent judge; model; entrepreneur; actress
"I admire the more traditional icons, like Jackie Onassis and Marilyn Monroe. Decades later, people are still trying to emulate their style. I've also always loved the way Debbie Harry dresses. No one is cooler than Blondie. Growing up, I was in awe of Cher in her Bob Mackie gowns—more sparkles! More feathers! More sequins! She's pretty much my spirit animal. I'm not here to blend in."
Occupation: Dateline NBC correspondent; Today fill-in anchor
"Saks is my go-to store, and it's right across the street from work. My dad, who was visiting from Canada, just went shopping here with me. He bought me a beautiful black leather Theory dress. My go-to item for fall and winter is also black, a black cashmere turtleneck. It always looks chic and sophisticated and it's great with blonde hair. It's also very easy."
Occupation: TV personality; MedGift founder
"In L.A. I would wear a four- or five-inch heel daily. But you couldn’t pay me to put my feet or shoes through that torture in New York. I go from frilly to edgy, all depending on my mood. I love my girlfriends’ styles! Jamie Chung[[fellow honoree, link to JC’s profile?]] is the accessory queen, as everything she wears looks effortless yet like she’s been plucked off a magazine shoot. And how can I not mention Blake Lively? Her look is so impeccable, plus I still go back and watch old Gossip Girl shows just for how much her New York style drew me in.”
Occupation: Ballet Beautiful founder, ballerina and trainer, launching a line of leotards and street shoes
"I live in my leotard. I pair it with my leggings when I'm running around, or with a pair of high-waisted jeans or leggings. There's nothing I wear more! It has to move, it has to be elegant and it has to make me look as pretty as I want to feel. I'd say my style is 1950s meets 1970s meets ballet in kind of an Old Hollywood look. Like what's great about New York, I have a little bit of everything going on."
Occupation: co-anchor of ABC's Good Morning America
"Sometimes an outfit can look good in person and look horrible on camera. Or it can clash with my co-hosts. It's a juggling match. There are times when I'll swing by Lara [Spencer's] room or Robin [Robert's] room and be like, 'Hey guys, I'm wearing bright yellow today, is that cool with you?' You want to wake people up and cheer them up. I never want to depress anyone with my outfit. I actually think simple is better. People should be hearing what I'm saying, not thinking, 'Oh my gosh, what are those earrings doing right now?'"
Occupation: TV personality; motivational speaker embarking on a multicity Dining With Bevy: Life With Vision tour
"New York is about dedication to a look. Mine is buxom babe. When you see someone in this city, even if they're casual they are going to give you a complete style moment. This season I'm in love with Balmain, the silhouettes and the textures, however I need an aggressive sale to happen before purchasing. I have a black Tom Ford for Gucci dress that I've been wearing for 15 years, the epitome of the LBD. It had a keyhole with a small leather tie. But busty gals and keyholes aren't the best fit, so I cut off the tie and now the cleavage is divine.'"
Occupation: musician (Annie Clark), new album St. Vincent out now
"I have this [Maison Martin] Margiela trench that's perfect for traveling and one of my favorite designers. Also Dries van Noten, McQueen, Comme des Garcons, Balenciaga. I like to shop vintage at Tokio 7, but I have a 50 percent batting average there. Style icons? I admire Albert Einstein for his uniform and David Bowie for his androgyny.'"
Occupation: Into The Gloss blogger
"Style in New York is about speediness and durability, because everyone is running around a lot, taking the train and all that. I just bought the Mini Trunk Bag, the Petite-Malle with a long shoulder strap, from the first Nicolas Ghesquiere collection for Louis Vuitton. Mine is white and black leather and it has little Xs on it. I'm in love with it, so great for streetwear, travel. It's so cute, I'm holding it right now!"
Occupation: entrepreneur; interior designer; 93-year-old fashion legend
"One has to be appropriate no matter how far out or conservative you are. I think that’s something that’s very sadly lacking in the world today, being appropriate. I try to dress for the occasion! Well, I dress to please myself actually. And I hope it works and pleases other people. And if it doesn’t, I always figure it’s their problem not mine. There’s no formula for style. Il n’exist pas. No free lunch, baby.”
Occupation: entrepreneur, launching a luxury streetwear men's line in 2015
"My style is tailored with a twist of eccentricity, modern dandy. I rarely dress down. I'm really excited about a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo I bought recently. And I have these baroque Versace silk pajamas. Selena Gomez was obsessed with them and had to borrow them for her birthday outfit."
Occupation: baseball player (pitcher), New York Mets
"I love living in New York, especially all the seasons we get here. I tend to layer up for fall and winter. I really like coats and vests over a sweater with a pair of boots. When I need to put on something easy but I know will always look good, I usually go with a white button-down. I probably have a few dozen in my closet. They're also easy to pack. You can never go wrong with a nice white dress shirt."
Occupation: hockey player (left wing), New York Rangers
"Leo DiCaprio always looks clean and classy. He wears a suit so well. And Ryan Gosling—he has such an effortless vibe about him, cool without trying. Plus he has a great accessories game, always mixing it up with the finishing touches like the sunglasses and watches."
Occupation: stylist, including the iconic Demi Moore nude Vanity Fair cover; Angelina Jolie and Maddox shoots; Madonna's "Take A Bow" video and Versace campaign
"I love shopping. I do it every day—Barneys, Bergdorf's, those are my big ones. Dover Street is amazing. Then my bargain favorite would be Zara. I usually wear one Zara piece with any outfit I have on. Oh, and shoes. I have every Givenchy sneaker they've made of late, every Celine sneaker and so many types of Birkenstocks."
Occupation: indie rock band, founders Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham; new album Encyclopedia out September 23, available now for pre-order
Jonny: "I just bought a really heavy sweater for the fall that has oversize flowers knitted into it. I found out that we will soon be recording a music video in a butterfly sanctuary, and so I am hoping the butterflies will be attracted to the flowers. Or maybe that's just bees. Ah, bees."
Jacob: "My favorite designer is anyone who's working with Shetland wool." Jonny: "Hedi Slimane and Richard Chai."
Occupation: fashion director and chief fashion critic, the New York Times
"I tend to gravitate toward women with a consistent and individual look. Anyone who has that discipline and sense of self I admire, whether I would want to dress like them or not. That can be anyone from Patti Smith to CZ Guest. But it does tend to be women—not girls. I think the test of time is a valid test."
