Miley Cyrus is spilling the tea on whether her gold dress in the “Flowers” video is a subtle reference to Jennifer Lawrence.
Lawrence famously wore a metallic gold Prabal Gurung gown featuring cutouts to the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games, which costarred Cyrus’ ex, Liam Hemsworth, in 2012.
In footage recently shared via social media, Cyrus, 32, was questioned about the similarity between Lawrence’s red carpet look and her archival Yves Saint Laurent gown in the “Flowers” video.
“Miley, was your ‘Flowers’ dress a reference to Jennifer Lawrence?” the fan asked.
“No, but I love that dress of hers,” Cyrus responded as she signed autographs. (The video appears to have been taken on Thursday, May 22, when Cyrus visited Jimmy Kimmel Live; the star’s outfit upon arriving at the Kimmel studio in Los Angeles matches her look in the video.)
Lawrence, 34, and Hemsworth, 35, were dogged by persistent rumors of a fling on the set of The Hunger Games movies. The speculation only intensified in January 2023 when Cyrus dropped the video for “Flowers” and fans noticed the similarity between Cyrus and Lawrence’s looks. (The song itself appears to allude to Cyrus’ past relationship with Hemsworth.)
For her part, Lawrence shut down the cheating rumors during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in June 2023.
“When Miley Cyrus’ song ‘Flowers’ debuted, there was a lot of talk that the music video was referencing a secret fling that you had with Liam Hemsworth while he was with Miley Cyrus,” host Andy Cohen pointedly questioned Lawrence during a game of “Plead the Fifth.”
The Oscar winner responded, “Not true. Not true, total rumor.”
“We all know Liam and I, like, kissed one time,” Lawrence continued. “It was years after they broke up. So I just assume [the music video] was a coincidence.”
During a 2015 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the No Hard Feelings actress admitted to sharing a kiss with Hemsworth off-camera. “Liam and I grew up together,” Lawrence said. “Liam’s real hot. What would you have done? … Yeah, I have.”
Cyrus and Hemsworth had an on-off relationship for around 10 years after first meeting on the set of 2010’s The Last Song. The couple announced their engagement in June 2012, but they eventually separated in September 2013.
The former lovebirds reunited in 2016 and wed in December 2018. However, Cyrus and Hemsworth again separated less than a year later.
“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers,” Cyrus’ representative said in August 2019. “They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. The former couple finalized their divorce in January 2020.
Hemsworth has been dating model Gabriella Brooks, 29, since 2019. Cyrus, meanwhile, has been linked to drummer Maxx Morando, 26, since 2021.
