The investigation into former head football coach Sherrone Moore’s conduct — and its subsequent fallout — came with a hefty price tag for the University of Michigan.
The school has spent at least $6 million looking into Moore’s behavior and the overall culture within the athletic department, according to records obtained by the Detroit Free Press.
Moore, 40, was fired as head coach at the University of Michigan in December 2025 after it was discovered he had an “inappropriate relationship” with a football staff member.
Days after Moore was terminated, the school hired Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block to conduct an investigation into the athletic department at large. The firm’s investigation remains ongoing, and there is no timetable for its completion, meaning the university’s costs are expected to continue to grow.
After being fired, Moore allegedly broke into the staff member’s apartment and threatened to harm her and himself. He was charged with felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking and misdemeanor breaking and entering.
At a hearing earlier this month, Moore accepted a plea deal and pleaded no contest to two new misdemeanor charges of malicious use of a telecommunications device in context of a domestic relationship and trespassing. The three initial charges, including the felony, were all dropped.
A sentencing for Moore has been scheduled for April 14.
“From the beginning, we maintained that the felony, stalking charge and the entering without permission charge — all the charges against Mr. Moore — were not supported by facts and law,” Moore’s attorney, Ellen Michaels, told reporters after the hearing.
While the school has not connected other specific names or incidents to their ongoing investigation, things have continued to be tumultuous at Michigan in the aftermath of Moore’s firing.
In February, the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons fired assistant coach LaTroy Lewis after police confirmed an investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving Lewis in 2024, when he was on the football staff at the University of Michigan.
Lewis, 32, worked at the school from 2022 to early 2025.
The alleged victim in the case said she reported the assault to Moore, who told her there was nothing he could do. Moore then allegedly tried exploring a physical relationship with her.
“As a layperson, she assumed that because he was the head football coach that he would want to address it, knowing it was one of his coaches that had done this,” the victim said.
Lewis’ attorney called the allegations made against him “false.” Moore’s attorney said he “did not fail to report misconduct, did not reward wrongdoing and did not harass anyone.”
