Team USA skier Breezy Johnson doesn’t want to hear from fans who are criticizing her fiancé over his finish line proposal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
“Guys! When your girlfriend asks to get engaged at the Olympics to combine the two loves of her life… listen,” Johnson, 30, wrote via Threads on Saturday, February 14. “Thanks for armchair qbing my moment but maybe do more research than reading one headline! Thanks!!!”
Her post came in response to social media users who claimed her partner, Connor Watkins, was stealing the spotlight from Johnson, who had just won the gold in women’s downhill alpine skiing on Thursday, February 12.
Johnson expanded in an interview with USA Today on Tuesday, February 17, saying, “There were people who seemed to think that he did it while I was standing on the medals stand.”
“Let’s not yuck other people’s yum,” Johnson continued. “This is what I wanted… He wasn’t stealing anything.”
She added, “For me, it was a really cool moment to bring the two loves of my life together. Just because it’s not what you want… doesn’t mean you have to make a comment about it.”
The day of the proposal, Johnson shared the moment via Instagram, posting a carousel of photos, which included shots of the ring and a wooden token that came with it, inscribed with lyrics from Taylor Swift’s song, “The Alchemy.”
“Hey guys… meet Connor! My ex boyfriend! And current fiancé!!! 💍,” she wrote in the caption. “Thank you to everyone who made this moment possible. It was everything I ever dreamed of. Kind of like Connor!”
Swift, 36, even jumped into the comments herself, adding another line from the song.
“‘Where’s the trophy? He just comes running over to me’ CONGRATULATIONS!!!,” she wrote.
“You have worked so hard and achieved so much, and yet you still find the time to love me, to make me feel special, and most importantly, you help me love myself,” Watkins said during the proposal, per the Today show. “There’s only one way I want to spend the rest of my life, and that is by your side. I love you. Will you marry me?”
Their moment came shortly after Johnson crashed on the super-G course. She told Today that seeing Watkins at the bottom of the mountain helped her bounce back.
“When you make mistakes like that in ski racing, you feel kind of stupid … Seeing him was really exciting,” Johnson said.
Watkins added that he was relieved to see her recover.
“She got up after the crash and was good, and that was a sigh of relief,” he said. “And then my heart started racing again because I knew I was about to get down on my own knee and propose.”
Johnson is a seasoned pro at clapping back at social media critics. She came out as bisexual in 2022, sending the trolls a message via Instagram.
“To the trolls who want to hate, hate doesn’t beat love,” she wrote. “To those who have no idea what I’m saying, head over to Google if ya want to know. To those who just want to hear about racing, headed to Copper for the final training block! LFG With love to all who support me, I appreciate it.”
