Jack Pugh is being remembered as far more than a football star after the former University of Wisconsin player died at the age of 24.

Pugh’s obituary describes him as “a cherished son, devoted brother, and beloved friend, who left this world unexpectedly.”

His death was announced by the University of Wisconsin on Tuesday, March 31. The cause of death has not been revealed.

“Jack spent his formative years in Hilliard and Plain City [Ohio], where he became known for his infectious smile, his humility, and his vibrant energy,” the obituary said. “Jack was not only a dedicated and hard-working plumber but also an accomplished athlete who excelled in both football and basketball during his school years.”

Pugh received his degree from the University of Wisconsin last year.

“His love for sports was matched only by his love for people; Jack had a huge heart and an innate ability to connect with everyone he met,” the obituary continued. “His warmth and kindness touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on family, friends, and colleagues alike.”

Jack is survived by his parents, Daniel and Kimberly, his older brother, Trey, and his sister-in-law, Liza

“Jack’s family was his foundation, and he cherished every moment spent with them,” the remembrance noted.

A celebration of life will be held for Jack on Friday, April 3. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to the Columbus Humane Society in his honor.

“As we grieve, let us also celebrate the extraordinary life of Jack Michael Pugh, a young man who lived with passion, love, and an unwavering commitment to those around him,” the obituary said. “He may have departed from this world, but his spirit will forever be carried in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him.”

A four-star recruit from Columbus, Jack retired from football in December 2023, citing personal issues.

“My physical health was not near perfect, but my mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up,” he shared at the time via Instagram, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Over years of prolonged depression and substance abuse, I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness.”

The post continued, “In no way was football the root of these problems, but everything in my life had distracted me for so long to the point I didn’t want to be alive for years. I never had prioritized my mental health all along, digging a deeper darker hole. I want to thank the amazing Coaches, Teammates, Friends and Family @badgerfootball has provided me with over the years for helping me find a life I’m happy and proud of, and to finally create a relationship with God. I’ll never forget the memories. Love y’all.”
