Copenhagen feels like a fairytale that has been brought to life. Every time I visit, I’m mesmerized by the enchanting streets, delicious food and, of course, the fashion. The Scandinavian city is quickly making its mark as a fashion capital, and it’s easy to understand why.

Everyone there is so stylish, and I made sure to take extra notes on my last trip. If you want to exude effortless Danish style, follow the guide below. It includes affordable options from Amazon that anyone can incorporate into their wardrobe, from loose jeans to wool coats. Let’s dive in!

Baggy Jeans

Figure-skimming denim silhouettes are so American. The Danes prefer a relaxed, baggy look that feels effortlessly cool. I saw a mix of baggy, wide-leg leg and barrel jeans while wandering through Copenhagen, and even copped a pair for myself before flying back to New York.

1. Old Reliable: Levi’s is one of the most trusted denim brands, and this high-rise baggy silhouette meshes well with the Scandi trend while still offering support along your midsection.

2. Cool Girl Chic: The Danes’ favorite combo? Baggy jeans with a low-rise waist. The choice reminds me of early 2000s styles, but when paired with a cozy knit sweater, the style becomes less intimidating.

3. Extra Trendy: Barrel jean silhouettes are thriving in the Danish capital. Ease your way into the style with this affordable pick.

4. Dark Denim: Opting for a black pair of baggy jeans makes the more casual style look a bit more refined. I saw people out at nice restaurants in jeans that resembled this pair.

A guest wears circle sunglasses, a red fluffy puffy short sleeves / buttoned cropped cardigan, navy blue denim wide legs pants, a brown wickers basket handbag, a green / blue / orange print pattern silk scarf, rings, white shiny varnished leather heels shoes, a gold chain belt, outside the Hermes show, during Paris Fashion Week - Menswear Spring/Summer 2023, on June 25, 2022 in Paris, France.

Rugby Shirts

What do you get when you mix preppy with athletic styles? The rugby shirt. Every clothing boutique I stopped in featured an array of striped options, making it easy for anyone to find a hue that works for them. The Danes were already embracing this fall-esque piece at the end of August, and as the weather cools down, it’s set to become a Scandi staple.

5. As Classic as It Gets: This cotton-blend rugby shirt features all of the timeless elements of the style — the horizontal stripes, white collar and button V-neck.

6. Layers for Days: Boost your prep-appeal by layering a crisp button-down underneath this fuzzy rugby sweater. Complete the look with a pleated skirt and boots.

7. Statement-Making: The extra wide stripes on this rugby shirt create a colorblock effect that makes the shirt — and you — the center of attention.

8. Go Neutral: The beauty of rugby shirts is that you can throw on a neutral one with a pair of baggy jeans and be ready to leave your house in minutes. The Danes would be proud.

Transitional Outerwear

The weather in Copenhagen is pretty unpredictable. It can be sunny and warm in the morning, and then a freak rainstorm can blow in an hour later. Danes always have an array of outerwear at the ready, and they seem to put the most effort into curating a well-rounded selection of pieces.

9. A Timeless Pick: Everyone, and I mean everyone, in Copenhagen owns a sleek trench coat due to their water-repellent fabric and sleek look. This oversized version could complete any outfit.

10. For the Chilly Days: Danes don’t let their style go to the wayside, even on the extra windy days. They simply bundle up in a wool coat, like this one, and carry on with their day.

11. Go Vintage: Copenhagen has some of the world’s best vintage shopping, so it’s no surprise that most people don recycled leather jackets. If you can’t go thrifting, this oversized leather bomber looks like something you found in your grandpa’s closet (in a good way).

12. Double Duty: An extra-oversized cardigan definitely counts as outerwear in Copenhagen, and this one doubles as a personal blanket.

Chunky Sneakers

Copenhagen is an extremely walkable and bikeable city. As such, the people there prioritize comfortable footwear that’s also stylish. Chunky sneakers are a staple and support your feet no matter how far you walk.

13. The Go-With-Everything Pick: A pair of white sneakers? That’s a no-brainer in Copenhagen. This pair will go with pretty much any outfit you throw together.

14. Pop of Color: Your chunky sneakers don’t need to be neutral, and an easy way the Danes incorporate some color into their outfit is with a statement hue. These Madden Girl sneakers come in an array of colors, including green, blue and red.

15. A Steal: Copy the designer look for under $20 with these chunky sneaks that closely resemble Balenciagas.

16. Literally Made for Walking: Get your steps in without experiencing a lick of pain thanks to these podiatrist-developed Dr. Scholl’s sneakers.
