As a child of the ‘90s who tuned in religiously for the WB-turned-CW lineup, Gilmore Girls played a pivotal role during my younger years. My interest was rooted partly in the rapid-fire dialogue of the infamous mother-daughter duo, but also their fashion choices, namely those of Lorelai Gilmore.
Played by Lauren Graham, Lorelai effortlessly nailed the ’90s fall fashion aesthetic, and much of that still holds weight today. Think rich mom turtleneck sweaters, sleek leather jackets, classic corduroy and pops of print. With her closet as inspiration, I scoured Walmart’s inventory to find clothes and accessories that all look plucked from Lorelai’s wardrobe, from her iconic tie-dye and cutoff jean ensemble to the polished pieces she wore to work at the inn. Read on for top picks from Lee, Prettygarden and more, starting at just $8.
17 Lorelai Gilmore-Inspired Pieces From Walmart
1. Lovely Leather: A leather jacket is a Lorelai signature look. This one has a two-button closure, a notched lapel and comes in neutrals like black, brown or beige, all for under $50.
2. Thick Knit: Bundle up like Lorelai in a cozy turtleneck sweater. This one costs a mere $8 and comes in a “rich mom” coffee brown shade that’s perfect for a Stars Hollow-inspired fall or winter season.
3. Infamous Tie-Dye: One of Lorelai’s most iconic looks is her pink tie-dye shirt that she wore with cutoff jean shorts and boots (don’t worry, those picks are below). This one for $14 looks nearly identical.
4. Daisy Dukes: Lorelai paired her tie-dye with cutoff jean shorts like these, which have distressed detailing, a five-pocket design, a high waist and a similar dark blue color.
5. Cowboy Cool: Finish the famous look with brown cowboy boots. These are well-reviewed and feature a mid-calf height, a square toe and subtle embroidery detailing.
6. Bold Blazer: Lorelai was known to sport blazers frequently, including a bright red one she wore to twin with her mom. This $10 option has a similar red-hot hue along with brass-style buttons that are reminiscent of the original look.
7. Corduroy Coat: For a nice transitional seasonal piece, consider this corduroy jacket, which is similar to a style we spied on the show, right down to the sherpa fleece-lined collar.
8. Fall for Florals: Lorelai wasn’t one to shy away from prints, including florals, which is why we could see her rocking this dress with moody colors, a ruffled midi hem and a wrap-style tie-waist from Prettygarden.
9. Pencil Poised: When it was time to clock in at the inn, Lorelai kept things looking professional, typically in a polished pencil skirt. This one comes in loads of colors for just $20.
10. Pretty in Pink: The color pink featured heavily in Lorelai’s rotation, especially when it came to her sweaters. This electric pink one hits two key Lorelai buckets: the color and the fact that it’s a cardigan, another one of her tried-and-true favorites. Plus, it has a soft, lightweight feel that can be worn across seasons.
11. Graphic Tee: Lorelai’s rebellious spirit had a way of coming through via her wardrobe, often while wearing bold graphic tees with cheeky slogans. We found a similar sentiment with this fun tee that does all the talking.
12. Crazy for Coffee: No character has ever sipped as much java as our girl Lorelai, and we could totally envision her in this graphic tee that voiced her adoration for the caffeinated beverage loud and clear.
13. Denim Darling: A denim jacket is a year-round staple, which is why we often saw Lorelai wearing one. This one comes from the legendary denim brand Lee and has front pockets, a nice hint of stretch and a price tag under $30.
14. Pick Plaid: Fall and flannel go hand-in-hand, especially when it has a checked plaid print as seen on this shirt. In line with ‘90s style, it has a bit of a fitted look, though it could easily be sized up for a more relaxed silhouette.
15. Knee-High Heels: You can’t go wrong with a classic knee-high boot, and this faux leather pair boasting kitten heels looks like something Lorelai would wear while walking through the town square with a coffee in hand.
16. Bundle Up in a Beanie: When winter begins, keep warm in a Lorelai-approved beanie, ideally one with a fluffy pom on top. This Redess hat has cozy cable-knit stitching and is available in a large assortment of colors.
17. Peacoat Perfection: Stave off winter’s chill with an elegant peacoat like this single-breasted stunner that would fit right in on the streets of Stars Hollow. The ultra-soft polyester-wool blend would look just as chic over tailored pants as a flowy dress.
