Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released on June 28, 2003 — but it was only the beginning for Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. The film, based on a Disney theme parks attraction, follows Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and young blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) who set out to rescue Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) after she is kidnapped by Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Due to the success of the first film, it led to four sequels: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), At World’s End (2007), On Stranger Tides (2011) and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). While Knightley and Bloom only appeared in the Pirates franchise’s first three films, Depp starred in all five. In 2022, amid his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, however, the Edward Scissorhands actor claimed that he was axed from his Captain Jack Sparrow role as a result of Heard’s domestic violence allegations. “My opinion is it was related to the accusations that Amber has made,” he said in a prerecorded video deposition, adding that he’d spoken to producer Jerry Bruckheimer about the situation. Johnny Depp

The Corpse Bride actor continued to be the face of the Pirates franchise until the last film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, premiered in 2017. He has starred in several Tim Burton films including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), for which he won a Golden Globe Award, and Dark Shadows (2012).

The actor was in a relationship with French model Vanessa Paradis from 1998 to 2012. The couple have two children together: Lily-Rose, born in 1999, and Jack, born in 2002.

In 2022, Depp made headlines for his legal battle with Heard, whom he was married to from 2015 to 2017. The 21 Jump Street alum sued his ex-wife for defamation, claiming that allegations that he physically and sexually abused her during their marriage are false.

After several weeks of highly publicized court proceedings, a jury ruled in Depp's favor in June 2022. The verdict ordered Heard to pay the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas actor $10 million in compensatory damages as well as $5 million in punitive damages. The Aquaman actress was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages for her counterclaim against her ex-husband.

Keira Knightley

After Pirates of the Caribbean made her a household name, the London native went on to have a successful film career. Her notable films include Love Actually (2003), Pride and Prejudice (2005), Atonement (2007)and The Imitation Game (2014). She also starred in the 2021 holiday comedy Silent Night.

The actress married musician James Righton in 2013. The couple share two daughters together: Edie, born in 2015 and Delilah, born in 2019.

Orlando Bloom

When Curse of the Black Pearl premiered, Bloom was already a star from playing Legolas in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The actor went on to appear in films including Elizabethtown (2005) and The Three Musketeers (2011). In 2019, he starred in the Prime Video original series Carnival Row.

Bloom was married to supermodel Miranda Kerr from 2010 to 2013. They welcomed a son, Flynn, in 2011. The actor got engaged to Katy Perry in 2019, and they welcomed their daughter, Daisy, in 2020. The twosome called it quits in June 2025.

Jonathan Pryce

Pryce played Knightley’s father, Governor Weatherby Swann, in the first three films of the Pirates franchise.

The British actor played Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio, the future Pope Francis, in the 2019 biographical drama The Two Popes. He is also well known for his portrayal of Prince Philip on The Crown and his Game of Thrones arc as the High Sparrow.

Pryce was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2021 for his contributions to drama. The Brazil actor has been married to the actress Kate Fahy since 2015. They share three adult children — Patrick, born in 1983, Gabriel, born in 1986 and Phoebe, born in 1990.

Geoffrey Rush

Rush played the feared Captain Hector Barbossa in all five Pirates films. In 2005, he won an Emmy Award for playing the titular role in the television biopic The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.

In 2010, he played Lionel Logue in the Academy-Award winning film The King’s Speech. Rush married Australian actress Jane Menelaus in 1988. The couple has two children together: Angelica, born in 1992 and James, born in 1995.

Jack Davenport

Davenport portrayed the role of James Norrington, the British Royal Navy officer with a distaste for pirates and a liking for Elizabeth Swann.

Since then, the London native has appeared in several television shows including FlashForward, Smash, Breathless and The Morning Show.

Davenport married actress Michelle Gomez in 2000. Their son, Harry, was born in 2021.

Lee Arenberg

Arenburg played Pintel, a member of Barbossa’s cursed pirate crew. The California native went on to have a recurring role as Grumpy the dwarf in the television series Once Upon a Time.

The UCLA alum has also made guest appearances on television shows including Grounded for Life, Seinfeld and Friends. He has been married to Katie Meehan since 2007. They share son Samuel.

Mackenzie Crook

Arenburg’s character, Pintel, was rarely seen without his partner in crime Ragetti, played by Crook.

In addition to his role in the Pirates films, Crook is known for playing Gareth on the British version of The Office and Orell in Game of Thrones. He also created and started in the BBC Four television series Detectorists.

The English actor married his wife, Lindsay, in 2001. They have two children together: Jude, born in 2003, and Scout, born in 2007 .

Kevin McNally

McNally appeared in all five Pirates films as Captain Jack Sparrow’s First Mate, Joshamee Gibbs. In 2020, he played Bernard Ingham on The Crown.

McNally shares daughter Rachel McNally with actress Stevie Harris. He has been married to actress Phyllis Logan since 2011. Their son, David, was born in 1996.

Zoe Saldana

Before Avatar, Saldana had a small role in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. She played Anamaria, a pirate whose ship had been stolen by Jack Sparrow.

Since then, she's joined the Marvel cinematic universe as Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. She will reprise her role of Neytiri in the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.

Saldana has been married to Marco Perego-Saldana since 2013. They share three children together: twins Bowie and Cy, born in 2014 and Zen born in 2016.
