While Dorothy isn’t a major role in the Broadway production of Wicked, the iconic Wizard of Oz character will make a cameo in Wicked: For Good.
In the stage adaptation, Dorothy’s presence only occurs in the background and shadows. However, fans got a brief glimpse of the movie version of Dorothy in the Wicked: For Good trailer.
While her face was not shown while walking down the yellow brick road, fans took to the internet to speculate who they believe will play Dorothy. Names like Alisha Weir, Maddie Ziegler and Dove Cameron were thrown into the mix to portray the role made famous by the late Judy Garland. It was later revealed that English dancer and actress Bethany Weaver would be the one sporting the iconic pair of red slippers in the film, which hits theaters on November 21. This was confirmed by people who attended early screenings that Weaver’s name was spotted in the movie’s credits.
Director Jon M. Chu previously teased what fans can expect from the character.
“Well, we definitely did cast Dorothy. You see her in some of our teasers,” he told Cinema Blend in December 2024. “How much of do you see of Dorothy? … I can’t confirm or deny how much you see of her. I will say that I do think it’s important for, whoever Dorothy is to you, to try to respect that as much as possible. But does The Wizard of Oz and our movie intersect in movie two more than ever? 100 percent.”
Keep scrolling to see who fans formerly guessed would play Dorothy in Wicked: For Good prior to Weaver’s casting:
Alisha Weir

Weir was the most popular name amongst fans to play Dorothy, especially since she attended the London premiere for Wicked in November 2024. The young Irish actress is best known for starring in 2022’s Matilda the Musical and 2024’s Abigail. She also made her West End debut in 2025 as the titular character in Mary Page Marlowe.
Dove Cameron

Cameron’s connection to Wicked stemmed from when she auditioned to play Glinda. She ultimately lost the role to Ariana Grande. Rumors swirled that the singer could be in the film as Dorothy after her name popped up on a Google search result for the cast list. Cameron is not listed on the movie’s IMDb cast page.
Taylor Swift

In the music video for “Karma,” Swift skipped down a yellow road similar to the one in The Wizard of Oz. Speculation about the pop star playing Dorothy didn’t go viral until an AI image of Swift dressed as Dorothy appeared on social media. However, the photo was posted by a parody account.
While Swift is busy with the upcoming release of her 13th album, The Life of a Showgirl, she does have experience in Broadway musical adaptations, as she appeared in 2019’s Cats.
Emily Rudd

Rudd was thrown in contention by fans after Mattel dropped the Dorothy doll. Fans noticed online that the doll’s facial features matched the One Piece actress.
Maddie Ziegler

Much like Rudd, Ziegler’s name was mentioned online in connection with Dorothy due to her sharing similar features to the doll. The Dance Moms alum has some acting experience as she was featured in Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story back in 2021.
