Candice Glover‘s got Mariah Carey‘s glitter stamp of approval. American Idol judges gave Glover a big standing ovation after Glover’s performance of The Cure’s “Lovesong” on Wednesday, April 10, but Carey took her praise to the next level.
The Grammy-winning singer approached Glover on stage and showered her with glitter. After Carey, who starred in the 2001 romantic musical Glitter, returned to her seat, judge Randy Jacksoncalled Glover’s song “one of the greatest performances in the history . . . of American Idol” and she broke down in tears.
Releasing her self-titled debut album in 1990, Carey — whose career was launched by Columbia Records exec Tommy Mottola, whom she later wed — ventured into film with 2001’s Glitter and 2009’s Sapphire. After the show, Glover shared her reaction to Carey’s glitter bombing with reporters. “I don’t know why she had that,” she said, laughing. “It was just a gold box and then she gave me the box! And it was an empty box but she was like, ‘This is what I carried it in, Darling.'”
“You know if Mariah Carey throws glitter at you it must mean something good, so I was happy!” Glover added.
