It’s official: Jennifer Love Hewitt is returning to her horror roots.
“It’s never too late to go back,” Hewitt wrote via Instagram in December 2024, confirming that she will reprise her role as Julie James in the latest installment of the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise.
“Julie James is returning,” Hewitt continued. “I know what you will be doing next summer!”
In May 2024, Sony Pictures announced the upcoming franchise reboot was officially a go. The horror flick is set to be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who cowrote the screenplay with writer Sam Lansky andLeah McKendrick.
Hewitt’s official participation in the much-awaited movie has only added to fans’ excitement over the film, which reportedly started filming in November 2024 and is scheduled to hit theaters in the summer of 2025.
“Listen, I loved doing those movies,” Hewitt exclusively told Luxury Handbag Shopping in May 2024. “There is nothing more fun than doing a horror movie. It’s the best. Julie James is awesome. I do think that there’s unfinished business there, and so I would be happy to do it.”

Who Is Starring in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’?
OG cast members Prinze Jr. and Hewitt will reprise their roles for the film, with newcomers Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Tyriq Withers, Billy Campbell, Gabbreitte and Austin Nichols rounding out the cast.
Has Filming Started on ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’?
On Thanksgiving 2024, Sarah Michelle Gellar — who’s married to Prinze Jr. and who also starred in the 1997 original — posted a photo from the set (although her character died in the original).
“You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say ‘closed sets,’ ya know?” the actress confessed while appearing on Live With Kelly and Mark. “So my husband’s starring in the movie, and it was Thanksgiving so I took our kids to Australia to go out there and visit him. And I was sitting on set, and I was like, ‘Oh, what a great picture,’ and then I posted it.”
Hewitt confirmed in March 2024 that she had wrapped filming on the project.
What Is the Premise of the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’?
The official synopsis reads, “When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.”
Is There a Trailer for ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’?
The film’s first trailer, which dropped in April 2025, opened with Cline’s character taking a relaxing bath without realizing her boyfriend is being attacked by the movie’s killer downstairs. After his death, she questions whether the incident was “karma” for the car accident she and her friends caused.
Someone is aware of the friend group’s deadly secret, as Cline’s character receives a card which reads, “I know what you did last summer.”
The trailer shows the return of Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson, who asks local police what they plan to do about the town’s latest killer. “This isn’t the first time there’s been violence like this in Southport. It’s not going to stop,” he states.
As Cline’s character and her friends become the killer’s targets, Wonders’ character recruits Julie for help. “I just have one question. What did you do last summer?” Hewitt’s iconic final girl asks at the end of the trailer.
