Sisters Haylie and Hilary Duff have come a long way since their days as material girls — but they have nothing but fond memories of their early years in the spotlight.

During the Tuesday, May 20, red carpet premiere of Lifetime’s Pretty Hurts, Haylie, 40, confirmed that she provided the singing vocals for Isabella in her sister’s The Lizzie McGuire Movie that came out in 2003. Hilary, 37, reprised her titular character from the Disney Channel series of the same name and also played her Italian pop star doppelgänger. The duo sing “Hey Now (What Dreams Are Made Of)” in the film’s finale.

“Yes, I was. You mean, 20 years ago?” Haylie quipped to Entertainment Tonight of singing Isabella’s part of the song, before noting her disbelief that the siblings’ Material Girls celebrates its 20th anniversary next year. “No way!”

She added, “Maybe one day, [my daughter Ryan] will sit and watch Material Girls and get a kick out of that.”

Haylie and Hilary played sibling heiresses in 2006’s modern teen adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. In the film, Ava (Haylie) and Tanzie (Hilary) face a shocking reality when they lose their family fortune during a scandal involving their eponymous cosmetics company.

In the years since Material Girls, Haylie has transitioned her career behind the camera and directed the likes of the upcoming Pretty Hurts, while Hilary still works as an actress.

Haylie and fiancé Matt Rosenberg also left their Los Angeles home base with daughters Ryan, 9, and Lulu, 7, to settle in Austin, Texas.

“We were ready for a little more space and we love it there,” Haylie told ET on the red carpet. “We love, like, our friends there, and [Ryan’s] school is there. We come back to L.A. all the time. We still look at L.A. as home in so many ways.”

Haylie further stressed that, while she and Hilary hail from the Lone Star State, both Ryan and Lulu are native California girls.

“Both my [daughters] were born here. A lot of my family is still,” Haylie added, presumably referring to Hilary and her four children. “It’s weird because Austin has become a little, mini L.A. in a lot of ways — and the flight is so short that’s, sort of, like this bizarre middle ground between L.A. and New York.”

She continued, “It doesn’t feel like we left. We come here a lot for work, and so, we get my Texas roots blended with pop on a quick flight whenever we want.”

Haylie and Rosenberg have been engaged since April 2014, never putting pressure on tying the knot.

“We’re busy with both of the kids and jobs, and we always say, ‘We will at some point,’ and then life continues to be busy, and we still really like each other, which is good, I guess,” Haylie previously told Luxury Handbag Shopping exclusively in April 2020. “At some point we will, but certainly now is not the time to have a wedding.”
