Things got fetch in Cancún thanks to CheapCaribbean Vacations.
Earlier this month, the travel company hosted two events in honor of the beloved Mean Girls franchise: an all-out pink pool party complete with choreography lessons from the iconic “Jingle Bell Rock” moment in both the film and stage production, and a performance from members of the Broadway Plus team.
Us was on hand when English Bernhardt (Cady Heron), Ashley De La Rosa (Regina George), Eric Huffman (Damian), Zurin Villanueva (taking on both Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith) and Olivia Kaufmann (Janis Ian and Gretchen during “Meet the Plastics” when Villanueva was focused on Karen) took the stage at the Grand Oasis Cancún to bring the musical back for one night only.
“We closed in May 2023, so it’s a little crazy to revisit it and dust off the old bones,” Bernhardt told the crowd of resort guests.
“I feel you. It’s been a while since I performed this show as well. The last time I did this show was March of 2020,” Kaufmann concurred.
“But you know what? We get to all come back together now and remember all of this amazing music and share it with all of you!” Huffman declared.
Produced by Broadway Plus and directed by Christopher Metzger-Timson, the performance included the songs “A Cautionary Tale,” “Meet the Plastics,” “Apex Predator” and more.
Villanueva, who understudied the roles of Gretchen and Karen on Broadway, was a standout on the stage.
“This one time, I had just done Gretchen and then I was doing Karen the next day. In ‘Whose House,’ they jump on the couches and people are flying — it’s a whole thing,” she said of playing different roles on different nights on the Great White Way. “And as Karen I’m supposed to go left and as Gretchen I’m supposed to go right and I almost went left when I was supposed to go right and it could’ve been bad! But it wasn’t, I did it.”
The Mean Girls–themed event could just be the beginning of pop culture crossovers in the works for CheapCaribbean Vacations.
