Boston Blue will look a little different for the rest of the season as the show shifts its focus away from Danny and Sean Reagan.

During an exclusive interview with Luxury Handbag Shopping, Mika Amonsen previewed the back half of season 1, saying, “We get more of Sean’s evolution into a police officer. The cases continue to increase in their seriousness and in their difficulty. The spotlight shifts a bit away from Danny and Sean.”

Amonsen, who plays Sean, noted that the show will start “focusing a little bit more” on the Silver family.

“And we close out on some newer people being involved. Without saying too much, there’s a few new kids,” Amonsen teased. “There are several more characters that get introduced on both sides.”

Boston Blue, which premiered in October 2025, focused on Danny’s (Donnie Wahlberg) story after he was originally introduced on Blue Bloods, which ran from 2010 to 2024. The spinoff has also allowed more of a focus on Danny’s relationship with son Sean, which he is working to rebuild throughout the season.

“Sean and Danny — at this point — are in a good spot. They’ve gone through those growing pains of working together, of navigating the new dynamics of their relationship and now we’re stable,” Amonsen continued. “We’re exploring some of the other characters that are being introduced into the show.”

Looking ahead, Amonsen hinted at a different father-son dynamic, adding, “We’ll see Sean slip into a different kind of energy than we’ve seen him come into before — and that energy is Danny Reagan. There’s an interesting situation that Danny has to handle.”

He continued: “Danny has to reel Sean back from being himself. He notices that Sean has more of his traits than maybe he anticipated. We see an interesting moment where Danny has to confront types of conduct that he used to engage in that maybe he doesn’t want to see his son engage in. There are things he doesn’t want to see Sean do or go down similar roads. That’s an aspect of an episode coming up that I’m really excited for fans to see.”

Amonsen previously spoke about getting to work with Wahlberg, 56, to develop Sean and Danny’s relationship.

“The process has all been very, very easy. Donnie just makes it so simple. I had a pretty good understanding of the character [that was created in Blue Bloods] and I brought that and I spoke to the showrunners and writers about it,” he recalled in November 2025. “[We discussed what they wanted to be] explored and where they wanted to go with the role.”

The duo prioritized the dynamic between Danny and Sean. “Donnie was very informative — obviously — because he has so much history with the show,” Amonsen added. “Whenever I had questions, it was very, very relaxed and it felt very natural with Donnie. He has this father-like energy about him. As much as he’s been Sean’s father, he’s been a great mentor to me on how to navigate a role like this and a show like this. I couldn’t ask for a better costar.”

Boston Blue airs on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET.
