When bubbly sorority girl Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is dumped by her aspiring politician boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis) for not being “serious enough,” Elle decides to prove him wrong about her blonde ambition. She dedicates herself to studying for the LSAT, and after getting a near-perfect score, she is accepted into Harvard Law School. Though she faces a lot of condescension over her appearance and personality, Elle is committed to overcoming stereotypes and proving she can be a successful lawyer and win Warner back.

Even if you can guess where the plot is going from a mile away, that doesn’t make Legally Blonde any less fun and rewatchable — there’s a reason why the movie is an American comedy classic. With two particularly iconic performances from Witherspoon and Jennifer CoolidgeLegally Blonde is a charming and funny piece of popcorn entertainment with enduring themes about smashing gender stereotypes, being true to yourself and learning not to view others as competition.

Mild-mannered father and evolutionary biology professor Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) is a meek, ordinary and unassuming man who soon finds himself at the center of everyone’s life. For no apparent reason, people everywhere begin seeing Paul in their dreams as an innocuous and passive observer, and Paul quickly becomes an overnight celebrity. But when Paul’s presence in people’s dreams becomes shockingly violent, the world begins to turn on him in disturbing ways.

After you watch The Drama, you’ll need to go back and watch the director’s previous feature, Dream Scenario — a quirky, hilarious and surreal dramedy that satirizes the fickle nature of modern fame and the way it turns on people quickly. The film marks another high point in Cage’s late-career work, in a performance that is both subdued and eccentric.

A crew of criminals, including Monte (Robert Pattison), was sent to serve out their death row sentences on a space mission to extract energy from a black hole. However, the criminals are all gone, and only Monte and his baby daughter remain. As the mystery of what happened to the ship and its crew unfolds, we are introduced to the leader, a scientist with nefarious motives named Dibs (Juliette Binoche), who conducted experiments on the prisoners. With only each other, Monte and his daughter must rely on one another as they draw closer to oblivion.

High Life is a challenging experience, but allowing yourself to go along for its ride rewards tenfold. The movie blends arthouse realism with far-out science fiction and a cynical perspective reminiscent of Solaris, as it meditates on humanity on the brink of collapse. Pattinson and Binoche give terrific performances, alongside a supporting cast that includes Mia Goth, André Benjamin and Lars Eidinger.

A meteor crash-lands in Florida and creates Area X, otherwise known as the Shimmer, an anomalous and sinister zone that gradually expands across the American coastline. Three years later, Kane (Oscar Isaac) returns from an expedition in the Shimmer and cannot recall what happened inside, nor how he returned, and his physical condition rapidly deteriorates. To uncover what happened to him, his wife, cellular biologist Lena (Natalie Portman), joins a new expedition into the Shimmer alongside three other women. But the Shimmer may not let them leave.

Annihilation is a highly underrated sci-fi horror-thriller hybrid, with a powerhouse cast, gorgeous cinematography and special effects designs as you’ve never seen before. The film’s strength lies in its embrace of ambiguity, and director and screenwriter Alex Garland offers no easy answers, leaving you questioning long after the credits roll. Portman and Isaac are joined by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez and Tuva Novotny.

Told in a nonlinear narrative, Quentin Tarantino‘s black comedy crime thriller weaves four interconnected stories across Los Angeles. In a diner, a couple named Ringo (Tim Roth) and Yolanda (Amanda Plummer) hold everyone inside hostage; two hitmen (Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta) retrieve a mysterious briefcase for their boss (Ving Rhames), while one (Travolta) is tasked with babysitting their boss’s much younger wife (Uma Thurman); and a boxer (Bruce Willis) ditches his promise to throw a fight, taking the bribe money and planning to skip town with his girlfriend (Maria de Medeiros).

Ambitious, funny, and shockingly violent, Pulp Fiction has remained a movie poster fixture on college dorm room walls for over three decades. The audacious, pop-culture-obsessed film is frequently considered Tarantino’s best work, a showcase for his quick-witted dialogue, complex storytelling, and ability to conceive of characters who will go down in film history.
