Jennifer Lawrence was already on the rise when she was cast as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, but this was the film that cemented her as a star. In a dystopian future, America has been broken up into districts. To keep the population under control, each district is forced to send a young male and female to compete in a contest to the death with kids from other districts.

Katniss wasn’t chosen for the Hunger Games; she volunteered to save her sister from the same fate. Her counterpart from District 12, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), claims to love Katniss. But when the games begin, can Katniss count on anyone except herself?

The Hunger Games is streaming on HBO Max until December 1.

Before he directed The Batman, Matt Reeves helmed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the second film in the rebooted franchise. This is an incredibly well-made sci-fi story, and Reeves gives the story an epic quality. Caesar (Andy Serkis) may have been raised among humans, but the leader of the apes has learned to be wary of humanity since the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

There aren’t as many people as there used to be, but this planet isn’t big enough for apes and humans alike. At least, that’s what it seemed like until Caesar met and bonded with Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and his family. That gives them hope for peace. However, hatred on both sides may send apes and humans alike into a devastating war for the future.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is streaming on HBO Max until December 2.

We’ve long since lost track of how many adaptations there have been of Jane Austen‘s Pride and Prejudice. But the one we keep coming back to is the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen plays Mr. Darcy.

In the early 18th century, the Bennet sisters are primarily looking for a good romantic match for marriage and to shore up the future of the family. Elizabeth’s not like her sisters, and she doesn’t immediately take to Mr. Darcy. But as events progress, Elizabeth and Darcy are intertwined with each other’s lives, and sparks inevitably bring out some deeper feelings between them.

Pride & Prejudice is streaming on HBO Max until December 1.

After starting his career on a hot creative streak, M. Night Shyamalan has been pretty hit or miss for years. Split was a return to form, and a thriller that centers on a powerful performance by James McAvoy. He portrays Kevin Wendell Crumb, a man who has multiple personalities.

One of Kevin’s personas has kidnapped three teenage girls: Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy), Claire Benoit (Haley Lu Richardson) and Marcia (Jessica Sula). The girls discover that some of Kevin’s personalities are benign. But his Beast persona is dangerous, and they’ve been brought before him as a sacrifice.

Split is streaming on HBO Max until December 1.
