A woman in Texas has been arrested after she allegedly threw boiling water on two boys — ages 2 and 13 — causing them to suffer from severe burns.
Stacy L. Gilbert was arrested and taken into custody on Tuesday, January 20, and charged with two counts of injury to a child — one recklessly causing bodily injury, and one with intent to cause bodily injury, according to court records viewed by Law&Crime.
San Antonio Police Department officers responded to a 911 call regarding an injured juvenile at a home on Maverick Creek around 1:15 a.m., according to KENS.
Once authorities arrived at the scene, first responders located the toddler and the teen. Police noted that both of the children appeared to be suffering from “burn wounds throughout their bodies,” according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Emergency medical services transported the boys to a local hospital, where they received treatment for their injuries. The conditions of the kids are not currently known.
After a preliminary investigation was launched, police allegedly concluded that Gilbert, 33, threw the boiling water at the boys after she became angry for an unspecified reason. Both of the boys were in their bedroom at the time of the incident, and she entered from the kitchen to throw the scorching water at them.
It is not currently known what Gilbert’s relationship with the two victims is.
After Gilbert was taken into custody at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, police said that the investigation into the attack on the children remains ongoing. Authorities also said that Gilbert might face additional charges if they find she committed more crimes.
Gilbert is still being held on a $30,000 bond as of Thursday, January 22. If she is released, she will be prohibited from possessing any firearms. Gilbert is next scheduled to appear in court for a pre-indictment hearing on Monday, April 20.
It is not currently clear if Gilbert has entered a plea to the dual charges or retained legal representation who could speak on her behalf.
The San Antonio Police Department and Bexar County Adult Detention Center did not immediately respond to Luxury Handbag Shopping’s requests for comment.
After Gilbert was arrested, several of her neighbors said they weren’t necessarily surprised by her arrest. However, they acknowledged how horrible the incident was.
“Your job is to care for these children, and that is treacherous to do something like that,” one neighbor told KSAT.
Meanwhile, another neighbor said it was unimaginable to throw boiling water on children. “They’re kids. There should be no reason,” the person told the outlet.
A third neighbor explained to the outlet that police had been called to Gilbert’s home several times in the past, allegedly that they once saw the children playing outside in bare feet near broken glass.
Injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury is a serious felony in Texas and is typically considered a first-degree felony if the victim is seriously injured, as in this case. Those found guilty of the charge can be sentenced to spend up to ten years in prison and pay unspecified fines.
