A woman was fatally stabbed at her home on Long Island, New York, and a teenage relative was injured after her estranged husband allegedly attacked them before turning the knife on himself in an apparent suicide attempt.
The Suffolk County Police Department confirmed in a press release that Adriana Barbosa was found with stab wounds at her home on Thursday, February 12.
Barbosa’s estranged husband, Marcos Marques-Leal, was also found at the scene with stab wounds. An investigation was launched into the incident, and Marques-Leal, 57, was eventually charged with several crimes, including second-degree murder, first-degree criminal contempt and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police reported to the home after they received a report of a domestic incident on the evening of February 12. Upon their arrival, police found the estranged couple and a teen relative who’d all sustained stab wounds from an alleged knife attack.
Barbosa was taken to nearby Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment, where she was later pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the teen was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is now listed in stable condition.
Marques-Leal was also taken to the same hospital for treatment after he sustained serious injuries of his own infliction. Police believe that after he stabbed Barbosa and the teen, and then allegedly started stabbing himself in a failed suicide bid.
It is not currently known how the injured teenager was related to the estranged couple.
Police have not shared any specific details about the incident or about Barbosa and Marques-Leal’s relationship. It is not currently known if police believe that Marques-Leal had a motive or if there were certain events that led to the attack.
Marques-Leal is scheduled to be arraigned at a later date, according to the press release. Police told People that Marques-Leal was still in the hospital as of Friday, February 13.
The Suffolk County Police Department did not immediately respond to Luxury Handbag Shopping’s request for comment. It is not currently clear if Marques-Leal has entered any pleas or retained legal representation following his arrest.
The Greater Long Island reported that the couple appeared to get engaged in 2015 and they got married in 2016. It is not currently clear when they broke up or the reason for their split, as well as if they were living in the same Long Island home at the time of Barbosa’s death.
Barbosa was previously married to someone else before she became romantically involved with Marques-Leal. It is not currently clear if she had any kids with Marques-Leal or her first husband, though she posted many family photos that included children on her Facebook profile.
Following Barbosa’s death, one of her friends took to Facebook to remember her with a tribute on February 13.
“Those who met you know that your qualities were countless, and that you deserved the best this world had to offer,” Pollyana Belo wrote alongside a photo of her and Barbosa. “I am deeply disturbed and outraged by such brutality coming from those who should protect you.”
The investigation into Barbosa’s death remains ongoing. Police have not shared any additional information about the incident as of the time of publication.
