The founder of a non-profit organization in Memphis, Tennessee, has been arrested after he allegedly strangled his wife, according to authorities.
Larry Hunter, who is the founder of Touched by an Angel Ministries, was arrested on Monday, February 16, for aggravated assault and domestic assault.
Hunter, 64, and his wife got into an altercation in December 2025 that turned violent, according to a police affidavit viewed by Action News 5.
Authorities claimed that Hunter threw his wife against the wall and strangled her, causing her to black out. Following the altercation, Hunter’s wife suffered injuries throughout her body including her lip, neck, hands and arms.
Detectives found and reviewed footage that supports the assault claim, and Hunter was eventually arrested for the crime.
While speaking to authorities, Hunter’s wife — whose name has not been publicly revealed — said she waited so long to report the incident because he allegedly threatened to “revoke her Green Card.”
Hunter has since been released from jail on a $45,000 bond, according to the outlet.
It is not currently clear if Hunter has entered a plea or retained legal representation following his arrest. The Memphis Police Department did not share any additional details when contacted by Luxury Handbag Shopping about the case.
Not much is known about Hunter’s marriage, including how long they have been together and if there is a history of abuse in their relationship.
In the state of Tennessee, an aggravated assault charge is considered a serious felony that involves intentional or reckless actions that cause serious bodily injury to another person.
If Hunter is found guilty of the aggravated assault charge, he could be sentenced to serve between two to 15 years in prison, be ordered to pay up to $10,000 in fines and be hit with a permanent, violent felony record.
Meanwhile, a domestic assault charge is a Class A misdemeanor in the state of Tennessee. The charge has no minimum jail sentence, though those arrested on the charge must remain in jail for 12 hours after they are arrested, according to the law firm Freeman and Fuson’s website. However, the maximum amount of time in jail for the charge is 11 months and 29 days behind bars.
Touched by an Angel Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Memphis according to the organization’s Facebook page. The organization’s mission is to “aid the citizens of our community.”
Additionally, the group has set out to “end homelessness, hunger and poverty within Shelby County,” according to paperwork submitted to Shelby County in which the organization was asking for a grant.
The organization said that if they were given the grant, they would purchase “food for baskets, toys and bicycles for children” as well as help “the homeless and less fortunate experiencing food insecurities.”
“The grant money will be used to help us to continue providing services to those who are underserved, underprivileged, homeless and hungry. Over the nine years of our existence, we have provided shelter for the homeless, donated clothes, food, furniture, cars, kitchenware, linens, hygiene essentials, such as shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, feminine products, Band-Aids, diapers, wipes and toilet paper,” the organization continued. “Our organization has donated generators when people experienced power outages during storms. Our organization was able to provide toys and bicycles for over 100 needy children for this past Christmas. These are just a few of the services our agency will continue to provide for the residents of Shelby County.”
