A man in Ammon, Idaho, was arrested on Tuesday, January 6, after he allegedly threw hot soup on his 3-month-old baby and rubbed hot chili oil in a woman’s eyes, according to police.

Carlos Swearingen has been charged with felonies for attempted strangulation, injury to a child, misdemeanor domestic battery without traumatic injury and an enhancement for domestic battery or assault in the presence of a child, according to East Idaho News.

Bonneville County sheriff’s deputies were called to an apartment in Bonneville County regarding a report of a domestic disturbance on January 6 at 1:58 a.m., according to court documents viewed by the outlet.

When deputies arrived, they heard a woman screaming before she ran out of the apartment with two children. The charging documents stated that she was “visually distraught, and her two children were crying.”

Deputies then heard a “loud bang” coming from inside of the apartment. The woman told officers that Swearingen, 23, was inside and claimed he had been “drinking all night.”

Swearingen was detained by deputies, who noted that he was only wearing underwear and had fresh scratch marks on his body at the time of his arrest. When Swearingen was asked how he got the scratch marks, he said that they were “scars from months ago,” according to the charging documents.

Swearingen then told deputies that he “shoved [the woman] around a little” during an argument but insisted “that’s all” that happened.

However, the woman said that Swearingen opened some mail around 1:50 a.m. and he didn’t like what he read. While it’s not currently clear what the mail was, the woman said it caused him to threaten to kill two of his family members.

The woman said she told Swearingen to “stop because they were having a good night,” according to the charging documents.

The situation escalated when Swearingen started to call the woman names. He then grabbed a bowl filled with onions, hot dumplings and hot chili oil and “threw it at their 3-month-old baby.”

The hot food landed “directly on [the baby],” so the woman rushed to the bathroom to clean it off. She claimed that Swearingen then came up from behind her and started “rubbing hot chili oil in her eyes and grabbing her hair.”

The woman tried to clean her eyes out, though Swearingen wouldn’t let her and started “striking her on the right side of her head with a closed fist.” She tried to escape the bathroom and asked Swearingen to stop because she was holding the baby, though he reportedly said that he “didn’t give a f**k.”

Swearingen continued hitting her as she made it out of the hallway, and she managed to hand the baby off to her 5-year-old. The woman said she started scratching Swearingen to fight him off until he put her in a “rear naked choke hold,” according to the charges.

The woman eventually managed to escape and fled the home with her two children.

Swearingen was arrested and booked into the Bonneville County Jail on a $75,000 bond, according to jail records viewed by Luxury Handbag Shopping.

Since his arrest, the victim has been issued a no-contact order.

It’s not currently clear if Swearingen has entered a plea or retained legal representation in the case. The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office Did not immediately respond to Luxury Handbag Shopping’s request for comment.

Swearingen is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on January 20. He could face up to 26 years in prison if he is convicted of the charges.
