The tragic death of 16-year-old Skylar Neese will be broken down and analyzed in Hulu’s upcoming true crime docuseries Friends Like These: The Murder of Skylar Neese.
After midnight on July 6, 2012, Neese climbed out of her bedroom window at her family’s apartment in Morgantown, West Virginia. Surveillance cameras captured her getting into the back seat of a sedan driven by her close friend Sheila Eddy. Their friend Rachel Shoaf was in the passenger seat. Just hours later, Neese was dead.
Ahead of the premiere of Friends Like These: The Murder of Skylar Neese, Luxury Handbag Shopping breaks down what happened to Neese and everything to know about the forthcoming docuseries.
What Happened to Skylar Neese?
On the night of her murder, Neese snuck out of her family’s home to enjoy a late-night marijuana smoking session with Eddy and Shoaf. The three friends drove to Wayne County, Pennsylvania, where Eddy and Shoaf stabbed Neese over 50 times and ultimately killed her.
After her murder, Shoaf and Eddy denied having anything to do with Neese’s disappearance. Instead, they claimed that the three of them drove around all night before they eventually dropped Neese off near her home.
Despite maintaining their innocence, detectives grew suspicious of Eddy and Shoaf when they noticed the teens posted content online that suggested tension. Detectives eventually discovered a video of Neese playing a game of “Would You Rather” with Shoaf and Eddy, in which Eddy ominously asked how they would rather die.
Shoaf ultimately confessed and took investigators to the crime scene. She also allegedly told police officers that she and Eddy killed Neese simply because they didn’t like her, according to ABC News.
Eddy was later linked to the murder when the FBI agents discovered Neese’s DNA on blood found in the trunk of her car.
After they were linked to the crime, Shoaf was sentenced to 30 years in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years. She had a parole hearing in 2023, and her request for freedom was denied.
Meanwhile, Eddy was sentenced to life in prison for her involvement in the murder.
