Former First Lady Laura Bush took Michelle for a private tour of the artwork in the east wing of the White House on Jan. 20, the day her husband was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States. Michelle decorated her daughters' bedrooms with reasonably priced finds from Anthropologie and Pottery Barn.
Michelle and her husband -- who have been married for 17 years -- got dolled up (Michelle's sparkly dress was designed by Peter Soronen) and danced to the band Earth, Wind and Fire at the Governors Ball on Feb. 22. It was the first time the couple hosted a black-tie affair at the White House.
Basketball fan Obama sat front row at an NBA game between the Washington Wizards and the Chicago Bulls at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 27. The arrival of the president -- the first in nearly a decade to make the mile trek to the stadium -- delayed tipoff by a few minutes.
Obama showed off his latest purchase for his young daughters on March 6. The new, $3,500 cedar and redwood playground -- complete with four swings, a slide, a fort and a climbing wall -- was installed on the White House lawn, just a few yards from the Oval Office. The set also features brass plates etched with the names of all 44 presidents.
Michelle threw on a pair of brown gloves and helped plant the first fruit and vegetable seeds in the new White House garden on the South Lawn March 20. The crops planted include lettuce, herbs, onions, shallots, cucumbers, peppers and peas. Local students helped her plant and will return later this year for harvesting and cooking.
On their first European trip, Obama and Michelle met Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in London on April 1. The commander-in-chief presented the queen with an iPod loaded with video footage from her 2007 trip to the U.S. She, in turn, gave the president a silver-framed photograph of herself, the standard present for visiting dignitaries.
The Obamas visited five countries in eight days as part of the G-20 Economic Summit, and while they were in London, they visited British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on April 1. Michelle -- who wore an affordable J. Crew outfit, a crystal-studded cardigan and a mint green pencil skirt -- had breakfast with Brown's wife, Sarah during their stay.
Obama, one of the most popular presidents in Hollywood, was serenaded by Fergie at the Easter Egg Roll event on the White House South Lawn April 13. The Black Eyed Peas singer -- who got to hug the president -- belted the national anthem and several of her own songs, including a clean version of "Glamorous" and "Clumsy."
