Prince Andrew has a history of shocking the royal family and the public with his choices — including his decision to marry Sarah Ferguson after dating less than one year.
Andrew is the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Unlike his eldest brother, King Charles III, Andrew has had more flexibility with his role in the monarchy over the years, including his 1986 proposal to Ferguson before getting the queen’s permission.
Andrew’s eventual divorce from Ferguson in 1992 raised even eyebrows since at the time it was still taboo to split in royal circles. Decades later, Andrew caused an even bigger stir when he was associated with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in the fall of 2019 — and accused of sexual assault, which he denied.
In October 2025, Andrew announced he’d give up his Duke of York title amid the scandal, which Charles signed off on. The king later stripped his brother of his prince title as well.
