Anna Faris and Chris Pratt announced in August 2017 that they were legally separating after eight years of marriage — look back at the way they were
Chris Pratt and Anna Faris first met on set of their film Take Me Replica Luxury Handbag Tonight in 2007, later finding out that they both grew up 20 minutes apart in Washington state. Faris was married to actor Ben Indra at the time, but divorced in 2008 after four years of marriage.
The Parks and Recreation actor and Faris announced their engagement in January 2009. In August 2014, Pratt recalled to Esquire magazine that there was no pressure to impress Faris when they first met because she was still married to actor Ben Indra. While filming Take Me Replica Luxury Handbag Tonight, he left porn magazines out and detailed his sexual encounters when she visited his apartment.
The couple married in a small ceremony in Bali on July 9, 2009. "We aren't going to involve the family at all," Faris told Us of the couple's plans to elope at first. "Then we will go on a honeymoon." Pratt added at the time: "I feel so lucky that the person I want to be around most, I get to be around most."
Pratt gushed about marrying the House Bunny actress to GQ in May 2012. "I married way out of my pay grade. I have no idea how that happened," he said. "She's so goddamn funny and so good. She is a legit comedy powerhouse. But I'm not going to question it too much. I don't know what it is, man. I guess chicks dig love handles or something."
The funny actors can always keep each other laughing — even in the worst scenarios! "He thinks that he's a great singer, but he's really awful! And I don't ever want to tell him!" Faris told Us in September 2011. "I'm always like, 'Honey, you should pursue it! Pursue it — pursue your country album!' He's really terrible. But it always makes me laugh. I can't help it!"
The Everwood alum received death threats when he asked Twitter followers if anyone was interested in adopting Faris' cat in October 2011. "To those of you somehow hung up on the notion that I kicked the walker out from underneath our cat and threw her into the streets, first of all, cats don't use walkers, so that's a ridiculous notion," Pratt tweeted in response. He noted that the couple wanted to "start a family" and they can't have an animal that "sh-ts all over the house."
Pratt and Faris' comedies Take Me Replica Luxury Handbag Tonight and What's Your Number? both came out in 2011, but still Faris had babies on the brain. "I would love to have eight kids! I don't think I can handle it though. I've never done that before, but I do want a lot of kids," Faris told Us that September. She laughed: "We want to populate the world!"
Us confirmed in May 2012 that Pratt and the Scary Movie 4 actress were expecting their first child together. "They planned for this baby and now seemed as good of a time as ever," a source told Us that August. "They really will be the best parents." A second added: "Having a kid is a big deal to both of them — they didn't take this lightly."
Faris and Pratt welcomed their first child in August 2012, naming him after Faris' father. "Anna Faris and Chris Pratt are happy to announce the birth of their beautiful baby boy Jack," the actress' rep told Us. "He arrived earlier than expected and will be spending some time in the NICU. The happy parents thank you for your warm wishes and ask that you honor their privacy during this time."
As the couple settled into parenthood, Faris just couldn't help but gush about her smoldering husband. "Chris is an amazing dad. He really is. He feeds the baby almost every morning so I can sleep in. . .It's very sexy to watch him be a dad!" she told Us at NYC's CBS' Upfront in May 2013.
Faris revealed in August 2013 that she chose to join the CBS comedy Mom because of the couple's growing boy Jack. "I was sort of thinking, 'You know, maybe I'll just let my husband work, and I'll just laze around, sit by the pool," she said at the TCAs panel. "Different priorities."
Pratt shot to A-list movie star status with his sci-fi blockbuster smash Guardians of the Galaxy in August 2014. He got attention for his viral-worthy press interviews, his slimmed-down muscular physique, and his Saturday Night Live hosting gig that September. He'll next star in the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World, in June 2015.
A sibling for Jack? Faris said in September 2014 that she and Pratt would love to have more kids. She also fawned over her leading man. "…I'm just pretty proud of myself. I had great taste," she said of landing Pratt during The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "He's a great family man and I'm so proud of his success and everything, but he's more importantly a great person and he's got a great heart. He's a great dad."
Pratt revealed in November 2014 that the couple's son Jack was born at three pounds. (At the time of birth, the couple said in a statement to Us that their boy arrived nine weeks premature.) "We were told, 'Okay, you need to be prepared for raising a special-needs child,'" he recalled during his GQ Man of the Year interview. "And we felt like it was devastating, but it also felt like, you know, 'We can do this.'"
The couple attended the L.A. premiere of his film Jurassic World in June 2015. "Anna and I are meant to be together," the Guardians of the Galaxy star said during a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session two months earlier. "Our relationship has made me believe in divine intervention and destiny, just as much as my crazy career and the way I fell into this life."
Faris revealed in December 2016 that Pratt updated her engagement ring. "I look [at it] and I'm like, 'I can’t believe it either!' He's an incredibly romantic man and I'm very, very lucky," she told E! News during his Passengers L.A. premiere. The Parks and Recreation alum chimed in: "She got me a tractor, so we're kind of even!"
The Everwood alum was supported by Faris and their son Jack, 4, at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on April 21, 2017. "I want to thank my wife Anna, I love you. You’ve given me so much. You gave me the greatest star in the galaxy in my little boy, I love him and I love you," he said during his speech.
Less than two months before announcing their split, the Mom actress revealed that she knew he was going to propose months before he actually did. "We had talked about getting married and were living together," Faris said on her Unqualified podcast in June 2017. "One day I found a bag from a jeweler of the floor of his truck, so I knew something was coming. I think I knew for, like, seven months. Finally he asked me on my birthday."
The couple announced in a joint statement on August 6, 2017, that they were splitting after eight years of marriage. "Anna and I are sad to announce we are legally separating," the statement read. "We tried hard for a long time, and we’re really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward,” he continued. “We still have love for each other, will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another."
