Samantha Scott made headlines for her connection to Dan Serafini following his arrest for shooting his in-laws.
In 2021, police responded to a call at the Tahoe City, California, home of Serafini’s in-laws where Gary Spohr was found dead and Wendy Wood suffered severe gunshot wound injuries. Wood survived the attack but suffered from brain damage. She died in 2023 by suicide at an assisted-living facility.
Serafini, who married Erin Spohr in 2010, was arrested in October 2023, after detectives claimed the former MLB player was responsible for the alleged 2021 attack. Serafini was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and first-degree burglary. He pleaded not guilty.
Scott, who was accused of being Serafini’s mistress, was also arrested in October 2023 in connection to the shootings. She pleaded guilty to being an accessory in February 2025 after accepting a deal to testify against Serafini.
Serafini was convicted murder, attempted murder and burglary in July 2025. He was sentenced to life in prison seven months later. Following his conviction, Erin filed for divorce.

Dan Serafini and Erin Spohr were friends with Samantha Scott before hiring her as the nanny to their two children. During Serafini’s marriage to Erin, he entered a relationship with Scott. While Scott was accused of being the pitcher’s mistress, Erin testified that she and Serafini had an open marriage.

At the same time Dan Serafini was arrested, Samantha Scott was also booked by the authorities in October 2023. She was accused of being Serafini’s accomplice. Scott pleaded guilty to being an accessory after agreeing to take the stand against Serafini.

While Samantha Scott was on the stand during Dan Serafini’s trial, she testified that she drove the baseball player on the day that Gary and Wood were shot. Scott claimed that she thought she was taking Serafini to a drug deal.
Scott also claimed that she heard Serafini confess that he shot Wood and allegedly helped him dispose of items from his backpack after the alleged attack.

During an August 2025 testimony, it was revealed that Dan Serafini sent love letters to Samantha Scott after his arrest.
“I love you, and I think about you so much of every day,” Serafini’s alleged letters stated, per People. “As crazy as it sounds, I wish we had more court days just so I could see your face. I wish I could tell you not to be so scared, but I understand that you are. There’s really nothing to be scared of. And it will be over soon.”
Serafini’s alleged letters also shared that the athlete had plans to reunite with Scott in the “airport parking lot.” Scott testified that Serafini was allegedly referring to a time when the pair had sex in a parking lot at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
