Emmett Rogers Fightmaster, known professionally as E.R. Fightmaster, is most known for playing Dr. Kai Bartley in seasons 18 and 19 of Grey’s Anatomy — a historic feat, as they portrayed the show’s first nonbinary character in a recurring role.
Though Fightmaster last appeared on Grey’s Anatomy in 2023, their role in the medical drama has resurfaced amid a rumored romance with costar Caterina Scorsone. The pair’s characters briefly sparked a beloved romance on Grey’s, making their IRL connection even more exciting for fans.

Who Is E.R. Fightmaster?
E.R. Fightmaster gained fame for their acting work, with projects including the TV series Shrill from 2021 to 2022, Grey’s Anatomy from 2021 to 2023 and the movie Sorry, Baby, in 2025.
Fightmaster is also a former member of improv comedy group The Second City’s Chicago and touring companies. Their work included performing with Boom Chicago, an English-language comedy troupe in Amsterdam.
In 2020, Fightmaster became a CBS creative and writing team member for the studio’s actors showcase.
Additionally, Fightmaster has dipped their toes into podcasting as the cohost of “Jockular,” a queer and women’s sports podcast with Tien Tran and Katie Kershaw. They also began pursuing a music career as part of the duo “Twin.” In 2023, Fightmaster launched a self-titled solo music project and released their debut EP, Violence, followed by their second EP, Bloodshed Baby, in 2024.
Where Is E.R. Fightmaster From?
E.R. Fightmaster was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. They began college at the University of Cincinnati before transferring to DePaul University in Chicago, where they earned a degree in women and gender studies.
E.R. Fightmaster Sparks Romance Rumors With ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Costar Caterina Scorsone
In March 2026, E.R. Fightmaster was spotted holding hands with Caterina Scorsone after leaving lunch at the Highly Likely cafe in Los Angeles. Days before the outing, the pair attended the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s 34th annual Academy Awards party in Hollywood, where they were seen walking into the venue side-by-side.
Years before they were spotted together in public, Fightmaster and Scorsone sparked an onscreen romance on Grey’s Anatomy. (Scorsone has played Dr. Amelia Shepherd since season 7.)
Amelia briefly dated Fightmaster’s character, Dr. Kai Bartley, during season 19 in 2022, but the relationship quickly hit an obstacle: distance. Kai took a job in London, while Amelia stayed behind to coparent her son with ex Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack).
Fightmaster and Scorsone remained close even after the former’s stint on Grey’s came to an end.
“A lot of our values align too,” Fightmaster told Fr Conventions in 2023 when asked about Scorsone. “I bring her with me to a lot of stuff and she brings me along to a lot of stuff. The last thing we did together that I was super stoked about was — I bring her to WNBA events. And we got to meet Brittney and Cherelle Griner, and that was awesome. Before that, we had volunteered at a high school with theater kids.”
