10 Witnesses Have Been Subpoenaed by Nick Reiner’s Lawyers
Nick Reiner’s former attorney Alan Jackson confirmed during a January 7, 2026, arraignment that 10 witnesses had been subpoenaed by the defense thus far.
“There are 10 current subpoenas that are outstanding,” Jackson told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Theresa McGonigle at the time. “We would ask that body attachments be issued and held for each of the 10.”
“Body attachments” are typically used to enlist law enforcement agents to physically bring a subpoenaed party to court because they have not complied with a court order.
Legal representatives for two of those 10 subpoenaed parties were in court for the January 7 arraignment, with both attorneys officially objecting to the use of “body attachments” to compel their clients.
“I don’t see the necessity of having a court order against an individual in this circumstance,” a lawyer for one of the subpoenaed parties argued.
“Fair enough,” the judge agreed.
Judge McGonigle instead decided to issue “a body attachment and hold it until the next court hearing” for the subpoenaed witnesses whose representatives were not present in court on January 7. However, the judge also ruled that the list of subpoenaed parties would remain sealed at least until the next hearing on February 23.
A further development occurred during the January 7 arraignment when Jackson formally resigned as Nick’s lawyer. He was replaced by Los Angeles County public defender Kimberly Greene.
“[The public defender’s office representatives] are here. They are staffed. They are ready to take over,” Jackson told Judge McGonigle. “My understanding is they are ready for the appointment immediately.”
At Greene’s request, Nick’s arraignment was continued until February 23, 2026. Judge McGonigle closed the January 7 hearing by confirming that Nick would still be held on “no bail.”
The change in attorneys could ultimately impact the number of witnesses called by the defense, though that remains to be seen.
Conan O’Brien Threw a Christmas Party Attended by the Reiners
The former Tonight Show host could offer valuable insights into the final hours of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner’s lives, as he threw a Christmas party that they attended on December 13, 2025.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rob and Michele got permission from O’Brien to bring Nick along to the Christmas party because they were “reluctant to leave him home alone in the guesthouse of their Brentwood home,” where he was living at the time. (Nick struggled with addiction throughout his life. He cowrote his father Rob’s 2015 movie, Being Charlie, and partially used his own experiences as inspiration for the script.)

“Nick was going up to people at Conan O’Brien’s party asking if they were famous,” an insider told Us.
Nick allegedly got into a “very loud argument” with his father at the party, which was overheard by other guests, per TMZ. Rob and Michele left the party prior to Nick allegedly approaching other guests.
Us reached out to a representative for O’Brien about the alleged incident, but he has yet to offer any public comment.
Bill Hader Allegedly Had a Strange Encounter With Nick Reiner
Former Saturday Night Live cast member Bill Hader was among the many high-profile guests at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13, 2025.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Hader was one of the guests who had a strange encounter with Nick after Rob and Michele left the party. Nick reportedly approached multiple guests — including Hader — to ask three questions: “What’s your name? What’s your last name? Are you famous?”
Hader tried to cut off the interaction by explaining that he was having a private conversation, per NBC News. Accounts suggested that Nick stood still and stared at Hader for a short time before “storming off.”
Us has reached out to Hader, but he has not addressed the incident.
Larry David and Billy Crystal Were Spotted at the Reiner Replica Luxury Handbag After the Murders
Multiple media outlets confirmed that Rob Reiner’s longtime friends and collaborators Billy Crystal and Larry David both visited the director’s home in the aftermath of the murders.
ABC News aired footage of Billy and his wife, Janice Crystal, walking down the street near the Reiner home, with Janice wiping her eyes. A neighbor told the outlet that Billy “looked like he was about to cry” as he exited the home. (Billy starred in Reiner’s classic movies The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally.)
David and the Crystals were among a group of Rob and Michele’s close friends to publicly memorialize them following their deaths. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a filmmaker was a privilege, but that is only part of his legacy.”
The Reiners’ friends described Rob as “a passionate, brave citizen” and noted that Michele was his “perfect partner.”

Comedian Eric Idle star may have key recollections of Rob Reiner’s state of mind before the murders. The former Monty Python star revealed via X on December 14, 2025, that he spoke to Rob “for over an hour” on the night before the director was stabbed to death.

Romy and Jake Reiner
Rob and Michele Reiner’s daughter — and Nick Reiner’s sister — Romy found her father’s body in her parents’ Brentwood, Los Angeles, mansion on December 14, 2025, The New York Times reported. Romy was reportedly called to the property after her parents failed to open their gate for a massage therapist. Romy’s roommate reportedly called 911.
The outlet disclosed that Romy allegedly discovered her father’s body but didn’t actually learn of her mother Michele’s death until she spoke to a paramedic outside the home.
If Romy is called to the stand during her brother Nick’s trial, she could theoretically offer firsthand testimony about the crime scene. Meanwhile, her brother Jake Reiner could potentially share details about Nick’s state of mind before the murders.
Jake and Romy broke their silence on December 17, 2025, by acknowledging that “words cannot even begin to describe” the “unimaginable pain [they were] experiencing every moment of the day.”
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” the siblings told TMZ in a statement. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Following Nick’s arraignment on January 7, 2026, a spokesperson for the Reiner family told The New York Times that they had “the utmost trust in the legal process.”
“[We] will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings,” they said.
