Chalamet added, “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.'”

After Chalamet’s comments went viral, fans were quick to resurface a 2019 video in which he shared a similar sentiment.

“I was like, no woe is me thing, but whether you’re working on movies or acting, or pursuing your thing, I started to get the sense that [movies were], like, opera or ballet or something,” Chalamet said at the time. “It’s kind of like a dying artform or something.

The Celebrity Backlash Over Timothee Chalamet’s Comments Explained

Doja Cat was among the most vocal critics.

“Somebody named Timothée Chalamet — big guy, by the way — had the nerve to say on camera that nobody cares about it,” she shared in a TikTok video. “I’m sure you can walk into an opera theater right now, seats will be filled out, and nobody’s saying a word as the performance is going because everybody has that much respect for it.”

The Metropolitan Opera also responded directly in an Instagram caption, writing, “All respect to the opera (and ballet) people out there. This one’s for you, @tchalamet… 👀.”

Justine Bateman weighed in on social media as well.

“Ballet, Opera, and Theater work has been around much longer than that of Film and TV,” Bateman wrote on X. “Every filmmaker should pray they’re [sic] film/series lasts as long as the work from those enduring performing arts.”

Steven Spielberg appeared to shade Chalamet during a panel at the 2026 SXSW Conference and Festival.

“At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with, or into the nighttime with. And there’s nothing like that. It happens in movies, and in concerts,” he said. “And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way.”
