Tristan Thompson has filed for a conservatorship over younger brother Amari.

According to court documents obtained by Luxury Handbag Shopping, the basketball player, 35, filed to be appointed as Amari’s limited conservator on Monday, April 27. The filing stated that Amari, 19, “suffers from an intellectual disability and developmental delay and is unable to take care of his personal needs.”

Amari has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a rare and severe form of child-onset epilepsy that causes cognitive impairment and behavior issues

According to the athlete, Amari is “unable to live independently” and “unable to handle any financial transactions” by himself. He also relies on Thompson for his care and basic, daily needs. Amari also “does not object to the proposed conservator” and “does not wish to contest the establishment of a conservatorship,” per the docs.

In the state of California, a limited conservatorship is used for adults with developmental disabilities who need assistance with everyday tasks without requiring the full scope of a general conservatorship.

People was first to report the news.

Thompson was granted legal guardianship of Amari in February 2024. Before he was under the care of his brother, Amari was cared for by the pair’s mother Andrea Thompson. When Andrea died in 2023 after suffering a heart attack, Tristan was awarded temporary guardianship. Tristan previously claimed that he was unable to locate his and Amari’s father, Trevor Thompson.

“Since then, Trevor Douglas Thompson has effectively abandoned the proposed word; he failed to pay any child support despite the court order and has not been in contact with the proposed ward or Andrea Marie Brooks since July 2014,” read court documents from Tristan’s filing to become Amari’s guardian in 2024. “He has done nothing to support or raise the proposed ward since then and has relinquished all rights to have any say in the proposed ward’s care.”

Following Andrea’s death, Tristan’s ex Khloé Kardashian stepped in to help him and Amari amid their struggles and grief. (Tristan and Kardashian dated on-and-off from 2016 to 2021 and share daughter True, 8, as well as son Tatum, 3. The NBA player is also father to son Prince, 10, with ex Jordan Craig and son Theo, 4, with Maralee Nichols.)

“Tristan and I are not together,” Kardashian said during a July 2023 episode of The Kardashians. “I know it’s hard for everyone to believe but I love love love Andrea and I love Tristan. I love Amari, and this is what family does. Tristan is the father of my kids. It’s just heartbreaking and then to be left with the responsibility of another person as well it’s a lot.”

Tristan previously gushed about his younger brother while celebrating Amari and Tatum’s birthdays last summer.

“Happy birthday to my two kings Tatum and Amari. You guys both have been a beacon of light to our family and we are so blessed to have you in our lives,” the athlete wrote via Instagram in July 2025. “I love you both so much and thank you for letting me be a father and big brother in your lives, I never take it for granted and can’t wait to see both of your futures.”
