Trace Cyrus is not a fan of his dad Billy Ray Cyrus’ recent social media post about their family’s ongoing drama.
“Sunday callin. Giving thanks for the California Rain,” Billy Ray, 63, wrote via YouTube Shorts on Sunday, January 26. “Praying for the brokenhearted and their pain. Praying for my family. For my children … sons and daughters … and their mother. Let this moment be the start of healing ❤️🩹 for us all. ‘The past does not equal the future.’ Amen 🙏🏼.”
On Tuesday, January 28, Trace, 35, quoted a Bible verse while sharing a screenshot of a story about his dad’s post via his Instagram Story. “Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves,” he wrote, adding, “Judge a man by his actions. Not his words.”
The post was one of several Instagram Story statements Trace shared on Tuesday defending his decision to express concern over Billy Ray’s health. “I’m very aware of the power of my voice. That’s why I usually stay silent,” he wrote. “I only speak publicly when instructed by Christ. I gave up my authority to him a while ago. I am merely a vessel for Christ to use as a messenger while I’m on this planet.”
In a follow-up post, he stated: “Your thoughts create your reality.” Trace also shared a childhood pic of his younger sister Miley Cyrus sitting in a car with her hand on her head, which he captioned, “Mood.”
The pair’s drama began shortly after Billy Ray’s performance at President Donald Trump’s inauguration earlier this month, during which he experienced several technical difficulties. In a January 22 Instagram post, Trace stated that he could “barely recognize” his adoptive father anymore, writing, “Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away. … We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns. You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it.”

He continued: “We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and half clean from alcohol. Guess what? I feel amazing … I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help. You know how to reach me. Till that day comes I will continue to pray for you.”
Trace’s brother Braison Cyrus later clarified in a Friday, January 24, Instagram Story message that Billy Ray was “healthy” after spending “a week in the hospital in the fall.” (Braison, 30, also said producing Billy Ray’s upcoming album was a “full circle endeavor” in a recent statement to People.)
Less than one week later, Trace claimed that Billy Ray was threatening to take “legal action” against him for his initial Instagram post. “You should be ashamed of yourself. I will always love you but I no longer respect you as a man,” he wrote on Saturday, January 25. “Everyone close to you is terrified to tell you how they really feel. I’m not. Get help.”
Billy Ray became the adoptive father of Trace and Brandi Cyrus upon marrying Tish Cyrus in 1993. The two welcomed Braison and daughters Miley Cyrus and Noah Cyrus before calling it quits in 2022. Billy Ray is also father to his son Christopher Cyrus, whom he shares with ex Kristin Luckey.
Though Billy Ray has not directly addressed Trace’s comments, he defended his “praying for my family” post via Instagram on Tuesday. “All I want is healing for my family. I am so glad to see the message of love is uniting us,” he wrote alongside an article screenshot about his message. “It’s time to turn the page. #ThePastDoesNotEqualTheFuture.”
