Simu Liu had a special surprise for his fiancée, Allison Hsu, and it involved Taylor Swift herself.
“I’ll preface this by saying my fiancée works in music, so she’s a digital marketing executive and she grew up a Swiftie. She loves Taylor Swift,” the Marvel actor, 36, said during an appearance on the Monday, December 15, episode of the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “Taylor Swift’s songs and her music, that was a big part of the beginning of our relationship.”
Liu continued, “I was getting to know her through those songs and why they meant so much to her. I was like, ‘Well, if there is one person who could make this engagement so special,’ and I reached out as if we are BFFs.”
Liu explained that while he’s not in Swift’s inner circle, he has “met her a couple times,” so he decided to get in touch with the pop star’s team to enlist her help for his proposal.
“I did reach out to Taylor through her publicist and said, ‘Hey, is there any way I could convince you to make, like, a two second video just to say congrats?’ She literally, two days later, sent it over and I was able to play it for her,” he said. “Taylor Swift was the cherry on top!”
Not only did Liu get Swift to play a role in the proposal, but he also planned a trip to Paris for the special moment.
“I was in London shooting the Avengers movie … But we decided to take a weekend to go to Paris, which I think she suspected something,” he recalled, “She asked me if she should get her nails done, which is kind of code.”
Liu got down on one knee on a rooftop in Paris with a view of the Eiffel Tower, but his surprises for Hsu didn’t stop there.
“I would say it was half of a surprise for her because I think she knew it was coming,” he shared. “She saw it coming, but she didn’t know I flew a bunch of our best friends and her brother, who lives in Chicago, and her sister, who lives in Kenya, and got them all to come in. When I led her up on the rooftop, they were all there.”
Liu shared that Hsu got “really emotional” having their loved ones present for the occasion, but the cherry on top for him was showing her Swift’s message.
“She was really emotional before and then when I played that video, she just completely lost it,” he said.
While everything came together perfectly for Liu and Hsu, the Barbie star admitted that planning a proposal was “very stressful.”
“For everyone who’s ever proposed or been proposed to, it’s a stressful environment. And I’m not necessarily the best planner in the world,” he reflected. “So this is, like, the biggest undertaking I have ever done and I had to do it all alone pretty much.”
Liu and Hsu revealed their engagement earlier this year.
“From weekends in Paris, day trips to Palm Springs, long nights on set, afternoons vegging on the couch and everything in between, I choose you forever and always,” Liu wrote via Instagram in May alongside a photo of him and Hsu.
Hsu responded in the comments section, “I love you fiancé!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
