Selena Gomez Says Taylor Swift’s Song ‘Dorothea’ Is About Her, Reveals Song That Makes Her ‘Cry’

Selena Gomez revealed exactly which Taylor Swift song is written about her.

“I’m a big Taylor fan,” Gomez, 33, gushed during a Tuesday, March 3, episode of the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast. “I’m a stan for life, for sure.” When cohost Lil Dicky (whose real name is Dave Burd) pointed out that Gomez clearly connects with Swift’s music, Gomez replied, “A million percent. Well, ‘Dorothea’ is about me.”

Gomez added, “We were figuring it out because I was 15 and she was 18, and we didn’t really know what was going on. We’ve never seen each other differently. When I listen to it, I hear — I’m so impressed how it’s so eloquently put.”

In “Dorothea,” which was featured on Swift’s 2020 album Evermore, Swift, 36, sings about a childhood friend who left a small town to pursue fame.

“Hey, Dorothea, do you ever stop and think about me? / When we were younger, down in the park / Honey, makin’ a lark of the misery,” Swift sings. “You got shiny friends since you left town / A tiny screen’s the only place I see you now / And I got nothin’ but well wishes for ya.”

In the chorus she adds, “It’s never too late to come back to my side / The stars in your eyes shined brighter in Tupelo / And if you’re ever tired of bеin’ known for who you know / You know that you’ll always know me.”

Swift also refers to Gomez as “a queen sellin’ dreams, sellin’ makeup and magazines,” seemingly a nod to her cosmetic brand, Rare Beauty.

Gomez also opened up about a personal song that Swift wrote titled “Family,” which she has yet to release. “It was over, easily a decade ago,” Gomez explained. “It was basically saying, ‘You have these amazing dreams. You wanna be in movies. In every crowd, I still see you.’”

Gomez continued, “Her part was, ‘You believe in my stupid dreams [of] playing stadiums.’ Now, when I listen to that song, both of those things — it makes me wanna cry — have happened for us. And that’s really sweet.”

“Back then, she was like, ‘I just wrote this song about us and it was just our story.’ I love it,” Gomez said while smiling.

She also gushed about their “17 years of friendships,” which has lasted through “multiple heartbreaks and love stories and fun stories and life.”

“We both ended up fortunately being engaged around the same time,” Gomez added. “And that was the coolest part.” (Gomez and cohost Benny Blanco tied the knot in September 2025, and Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement in August 2025.)
