Danny McBride is saying goodbye to The Righteous Gemstones

The creator, executive producer and star of the HBO series told Luxury Handbag Shopping exclusively at the Los Angeles premiere of the fourth and final season that ending Gemstones is “bittersweet.”

“I’m definitely sad that I won’t be seeing all of these beautiful faces at work every day, but I’m also very excited for the audiences to see what we’ve cooked up this season,” McBride, 48, said at Paramount Theatre this week. “I think it’s been a lot of fun. I think there’s some unexpected twists and turns and, ultimately, there’s something really fun about completing something on your own terms.”

McBride, who stars as Jesse Gemstone — the associate pastor of his father Eli’s megachurch — acknowledged that “a lot of shows get axed or they go on beyond their time,” but he feels that the Gemstones cast and crew is “wrapping this thing up at the perfect time.”

In season 4 of the HBO series, the Gemstone family’s “codependence is tested as they attempt to move forward without letting go of their storied past,” according to the official synopsis. The Righteous Gemstones is the second series McBride created, produced, wrote and starred in following HBO’s Vice Principals, which ran for two seasons.

McBride jokingly told Us that leading the show, which costars John Goodman, Walton Goggins, Adam DeVine, Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman and Jennifer Nettles, for four seasons has taught him that he can “carry an incredible amount of stress and still smile.”

As for the future, McBride is looking to challenge himself “to do something I haven’t done before” in his career.

“I mean, this season we definitely pushed the boundaries of things we’ve tried before in this show, and I found that exciting and fun,” McBride said. “So I think whatever it is, it’ll hopefully be something that pushes me to flex muscles I haven’t flexed before.”

Could that include a cameo on friend Ben Stiller’s hit Apple TV+ show Severance? McBride is open to the idea.

“Any day of the week,” the actor said when asked if he’d ever appear on the show. “For Stiller? Any day of the week.”

The Righteous Gemstones returns Sunday, March 9, on Max.
