Serial entrepreneur Kim Perell‘s forthcoming book, Mistakes That Made Me a Millionaire: How to Transform Setbacks into Extraordinary Success, features a foreword by Marc Randolph, cofounder and first CEO of Netflix.

In four decades as an entrepreneur, Randolph has helped seed dozens of successful tech ventures and has founded or co-founded six other successful startups, including Looker Data Sciences, which was acquired by Google for $2.6 billion. He’s also the author of the internationally best-selling memoir, That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and The Amazing Life of an Idea.

Randolph’s impact on Netflix, and the impact the company has had on the popularity of streaming is unmatched.

“To Marc Randolph, for writing the foreword and for always pushing me to raise my game — on and off set. I’m grateful for your friendship and guidance,” Perell writes in Mistakes That Made Me a Millionaire.

Perell, the nine-time founder behind multiple multimillion-dollar ventures, is bringing her hard-won lessons to the page in Mistakes That Made Me a Millionaire, set for release next month.

The bestselling author, renowned angel investor, and mother of two sets of twins lays bare the missteps that helped shape her career — from being fired early in her career to selling her company for $235 million and founding 100.co, a venture firm backing the likes of Cay Skin (with Winnie Harlow) and Juni (with Jay and Radhi Shetty).

Her new book breaks down the mistakes that nearly derailed her — and how she turned each into a launchpad for growth. The book aims to strip away the glossy facade of social media success stories and show how embracing failure can unlock powerful transformation.

“From a young age, we’re taught to avoid mistakes at all costs. Success is rewarded, failure is penalized, and doing things perfectly becomes the goal,” she writes early in the book. “By the time we’ve reached adulthood, these learned behaviors hold us back in ways we often don’t even realize. We hesitate to take risks, we stick to what’s considered ‘safe,’ and we shelve our dreams — all because we’re afraid of getting it wrong. The result? Unrealized potential, abandoned projects, and a culture that champions perfection while concealing the messy middle where real growth happens.”

Perell breaks down her 10 biggest mistakes for readers: Waiting to Feel 100% Ready; Trying to Do Everything Alone; Being Paralyzed by Fear of Failure; Holding on to Toxic Relationships; Staying Too Long; Failing to Pivot; Picking the Wrong People; Believing You’re Unqualified; Quitting Too Soon; and Thinking Business Isn’t Personal.

“When looking to start my first business, I was riddled with fear and overwhelmed with anxiety. It is hard to let go of what’s familiar and safe. Yet the idea of going it alone excited me — and that was a crucial piece of information,” she writes. “Once I believed more in my vision and myself than in my fears, I had the courage to break out of paralysis and move forward. If your idea scares you and energizes you in equal measure, I suggest you take action.”

Mistakes That Made Me A Millionaire offers compelling stories and practical insights to help readers avoid common mistakes. More than a memoir, the book offers a tactical roadmap for anyone navigating entrepreneurship, career shifts, or personal growth. Each chapter is packed with real-life stories, actionable advice, and raw reflections from Perell’s journey.

Perell’s past books, Jump: Do What Scares You in Business and in Life and The Execution Factor: The One Skill That Drives Success, became national bestsellers and, and her latest title builds on that momentum, blending inspiration with strategy for anyone who’s ever felt derailed by a wrong turn.

Mistakes That Made Me a Millionaire hits shelves Aug. 12.

As Marc Randolph can attest with Netflix, there are multiple transformations in every business. Kim Perell is showing her readers that sometimes what at first seems like a misstep, can help lead to a successful change.
