Melissa Gilbert is standing by her husband, Timothy Busfield, despite his child sex abuse charges, calling his arrest “the most traumatizing experience of our lives” while maintaining her belief in his innocence.
The Little House on the Prairie alum broke her silence in a candid interview with George Stephanopoulos that aired during the April 6, 2026, episode of Good Morning America. When asked about prior allegations against her husband from 1994 and 2012, Gilbert was firm in her defense, noting that she confronted him directly and was assured that he told her the truth.
Gilbert deleted her social media accounts before speaking out, ditching both her Instagram and Threads page just one day after Luxury Handbag Shopping obtained an arrest warrant on January 9, 2026, issued by New Mexico authorities. Busfield is accused of touching two underage twin boys inappropriately when they worked together on TV series The Cleaning Lady between 2022 and 2024. (He was released from jail on January 20, 2026, on his own recognizance while awaiting trial.)

Melissa Gilbert’s Unwavering Support for Timothy Busfield Revealed
Shortly after Timothy Busfield’s arrest, Melissa Gilbert publicly defended her husband of 12 years in a January 2026 statement through her rep.
“During this period, her focus is on supporting and caring for their very large family as they navigate this moment,” the rep told Us. “Melissa stands with and supports her husband and will address the public at an appropriate time.”
Gilbert also wrote a letter asking a judge to keep Busfield “safe” during his brief time behind bars. She described him as having “the strongest moral compass of any human I have ever known.”

“Your Honor, this is the strangest letter I’ve ever had to write. I only want this extraordinary man safe and whole,” she continued. “Please, please take care of my sweet husband. As he is my protector, I am his, but I cannot protect him now and I think that, more than anything else, is what is truly breaking my heart, I am relying on [you] to protect him for me.”
Gilbert was present at a January 20, 2026, court hearing where a judge decided to release Busfield from jail before trial. She was seen saying, “Thank you, God,” as the decision was revealed.
Melissa Gilbert Said ‘Our Life as We Knew It Is Done’
In a teaser from the interview shared on April 2, 2026, Melissa Gilbert told Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos that her life had been “hell” since allegations about Timothy Busfield made headlines.
“Our life as we knew it is done,” she said. “We are grieving what we had — all of our plans, all of our dreams, all of our ideas, all of our projects. For Tim, it’s done. He’s canceled. Even if he’s exonerated, he will always be that guy. [He’s] the last person in the world who would hurt a child. And believe me, if I thought for a second that Tim Busfield hurt a child, he’d have a lot more to worry about than prison.”
Gilbert declared, “I am 100 percent confident he will be exonerated.” She acknowledged, however, that the pair “have to be prepared for all scenarios.”
“He is nothing if not completely honest with me. I trust him with my children’s lives, with my grandchildren’s lives, my nieces and nephews. He is an honorable, caring, generous human being,” she said.
When asked what “justice” would look like for the couple, Gilbert got emotional. “Exoneration, an apology, free him from this cloud,” she replied.
Melissa Gilbert Denies Being ‘Complicit’ Amid Timothy Busfield Allegations
George Stephanopoulos noted during his April 2026 interview with Melissa Gilbert that the family of the alleged victims did not respond to a request for comment ahead of airing.
“I need to make something really abundantly clear,” Gilbert said while addressing the claims against her husband, Timothy Busfield. “These allegations have been out in the ether for a really long time. When Tim and I got together, the internet existed. I didn’t go into my relationship with him blind. I am neither naive nor am I complicit. I talked to him about it, I asked him questions about it. I heard his side of the story — which no one has ever heard — which is the truth. And when the time is right, and that is not now, Tim will tell the truth of all of these past allegations when he needs to.”
The Charges Against Timothy Busfield Explained
Us confirmed in January 2026 that an arrest warrant was issued for Timothy Busfield in New Mexico after he was accused of child sexual abuse while serving as director on the Fox drama The Cleaning Lady. Days later, he turned himself in to law enforcement, vehemently denying the allegations in a video obtained by TMZ.
“I’m going to confront these lies. They’re horrible. They’re all lies, and I did not do anything to those little boys,” Busfield said. “I’m going to fight it. I’m going to fight it with a great team, and I’m going to be exonerated. I know I am because this is all so wrong and all lies.”
According to legal documents, the accuser said that he was 7 years old when he worked with Busfield on the since-canceled series. Busfield allegedly touched the child several times, and the young actor was “very afraid of Tim and was relieved when he was off set.”
Busfield was indicted by a grand jury in New Mexico in February on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a child. He pleaded not guilty. He could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted. His trial is currently scheduled to begin in May 2027.
