Throughout the years, Keith Urban penned several songs referencing his love story with Nicole Kidman prior to their September 2025 split.

The pair met at the G’Day USA Gala in 2005 and eventually tied the knot in June 2006. They went on to welcome daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret in July 2008 and December 2011, respectively.

During their marriage, Urban admitted to writing some music about Nicole, including the 2018 song “Gemini,” which featured some racy lyrics.

“The song is actually about Nicole — and she loves it,” he said in a March 2019 interview with iNews at the time. “It’s a fun song. My cowriter Julia Michaels asked me to describe Nicole and that’s what came out.”

The song was released on the album, Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing, in 2006 after Nicole staged an intervention for Urban to go to rehab for his drug and alcohol addiction.

“Got It Right This Time” features lyrics such as, “She believes in me like I’ve been trying to do/ I’m seeing things I’ve never seen before/ Ever since she came into my life/ I’ve been a better man.”

On his 2007 Greatest Hits album, Urban rerecorded the song with the ending, “And I think I got it right this time/ I mean, I know I do.”

“It’s interesting, because the song’s hook is, ‘I think I got it right this time,’” Urban shared in an interview with AOL in 2007. “And I’m certainly at a point now where there’s no thinking involved! There’s a little more conviction than that. And I had that full conviction when I wrote it, but as a songwriter, there are choices made with words because they sing well. But as the song has evolved and grown, our marriage has evolved a lot.”

‘Once In A Lifetime’

On his 2006 album, Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing, Urban also included the love song “Once In a Lifetime,” which he wrote before his wedding to Kidman.

“Nic was getting very nervous about marrying me. She was saying things like, ‘It’s a long shot,’ [but] I knew she loved me and was just nervous,” the country musician said during a concert in 2014 per American Songwriter. “I did everything I could to remind her that I was going to be her man forever.”

The lyrics read: “I can see it in your eyes/ And feel it in your touch/ I know that you’re scared/ But you’ve never been this loved/ It’s a long shot, baby/ I know it’s true/ But if anyone can make it/ I’m betting on me and you.”

‘Thank You’

On his 2009 album, Defying Gravity, Urban included the song “Thank You,” which was dedicated to Kidman for helping him get through tough times.

The lyrics read, “And I found myself in places I thought I’d never go/ Surrounded by strangers I was so far from home/ And I don’t know how you found me/ All I know is I owe everything to you, yes, I do.”

In a 2009 interview with Country Music TV, Urban shared that he wanted to write the song for his wife.

“She’s been an incredible strength for me. In the last couple of years, particularly so,” he gushed at the time.

‘Without You’

On his 2010 album, Get Closer, Urban released the song “Without You,” written by Dave Pahanish and Joe West that described the love he has for Kidman and their daughter Sunday.

“It really is my life story,” Urban told Nashville Lifestyles magazine in January 2011. “It’s crazy — the fast cars and the guitars and the little girl coming along. It’s an amazing song, and I would have never allowed myself to write it.”

The lyrics read, “It’s nice to have someone, so honestly devoted/ But when it’s said and done, girl I hope you know that/ The traveling, the singing, it don’t mean nothing without you/ The fast cars, the guitars, they are all just second to / This life, this love that you and I have been dreaming of, for so long/ It’d all be as good as gone, without you.”

‘The Fighter’

On his 2016 album, Ripcord, Urban recorded the love song “The Fighter” featuring Carrie Underwood.

“It was just a very quick, quick song to write, because I literally thought about Nic and I and our relationship in the beginning, and some of the things we had said all went into that song,” he recalled in a March 2017 interview with The Boot.

The lyrics to “Fighter” read, “What if I fall?/ I won’t let you fall/ What if I cry?/ I’ll never make you cry/ And if I get scared?/ I’ll hold you tighter/ When they’re tryna get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter.”

Following the song’s release, Urban dropped a music video on YouTube of him and Kidman singing the lyrics in their car together.

‘Gemini’

On his 2018 album, Graffiti U, Urban included the racy song “Gemini,” which he confirmed to be about Kidman.

“My cowriter Julia Michaels asked me to describe Nicole and that’s what came out,” he told iNews in a March 2019 interview, noting that the opening verse describes Kidman perfectly. “She is Gemini, but she’s not a contradiction. She can roll with things.”

Some of the NSFW lyrics include, “She’s a maniac in bed/ But a brainiac in her head/ And I know that everybody knows/ Ooh, that she’s both.”

Following the song’s release, Kidman shared that she enjoyed the song and didn’t mind the lyrics.

“I don’t censor his art, if I can be a muse for it. It is embarrassing, but at the same time, it’s better than saying, ‘God, I’m so bored. Make an effort, Nicole!’” she said on The Kyle & Jackie O Show’s “Breakfast With the Stars” podcast in July 2019.

On his 2020 album, The Speed of Now Part 1, Urban touches on how his romance with Kidman changed him into a better man in the song “Better Than I Am.”

The song’s lyrics include, “Have I used you?/ If I’m honest, maybe sometimes/ And though my past is far behind me/ It’s still not as far as I want/ But I will open my arms and I’ll fall at your feet/ And I’ll let you in to where you can so damage me/ I will stand in the light, least as best I can/ And I’ll live like I’m better, better than I am/ Better than I am.”
