Jon Hamm just admitted that he’d burglarize his own friends — but only to watch them squirm.

In an interview with SFGate published March 31, the actor joked that he would consider swiping certain friends’ shiny awards just to hide them and cause a brief moment of chaos.

It’s a fitting confession from the star of Your Friends & Neighbors, Apple TV’s hit series where his character does exactly that — robs his inner circle to survive.

In the show, Hamm plays Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a financial titan whose life crumbles fast. After sleeping with a colleague, Coop finds himself divorced and unemployed.

Blackballed from the finance sector entirely, he resorts to burglarizing the homes of people in his own social circle and pawning stolen items just to stay afloat.

Would Jon Hamm Steal a Friends’ Oscar? Probably.

The SFGate interview put the question to him directly: would Hamm steal from his friends in real life, the way Coop does on screen?

“I’ve got quite a few friends that have certain shaped awards that I would probably steal but not so I could have them,” he told the outlet.

His motivation wasn’t jealousy. He just wanted to cause chaos.

“Just so I could hide the awards from them and cause them anxiety. That would be more fun. Go steal somebody’s Academy Award,” he added.

When asked to name names, Hamm said he would “never” reveal his targets.

Hamm himself has never been nominated for an Oscar. He does own one Emmy (from 18 nominations), two Golden Globes (from seven nominations) and two SAG Awards (from 14 nominations), according to IMDB.

Jon Hamm Says He Has Had Friends Steal From Him in the Past

Hamm hasn’t stolen from a friend, but he’s been on the other side. He recalled a childhood incident where a friend took one of his comic books in fifth or sixth grade.

“I was furious to the point where I made my dad call this guy’s dad and say, ‘Yo, give my kid his comic books back,’” he told SFGate.

The comic wasn’t especially rare. He remembered it as the S issue from his collection of The History of the Marvel Universe comics. But that didn’t soften the blow.

“I was like, ‘This is not OK,’” he said. “There was no internet. I couldn’t just order up another one.”

He got the comic back eventually — and it’s still sitting in his closet to this day. As for the kid who took it: “Honestly, I couldn’t even tell you his name.”

The interviewer also asked how casual Hamm is with his own belongings.

“I’m probably casual with stuff like that because I live a very ridiculous life. I’m gifted things that are worth a lot of money that, in a vacuum, I don’t particularly care about,” he told SFGate.

He said he wouldn’t describe himself as a hoarder and doesn’t acquire things just to have them. He gives things away regularly instead.

“So I do tend to give a lot of things away. My thinking there is, ‘I guess somebody should have this and experience it,’” he explained.

That extends to his wardrobe. Hamm said he visits Goodwill “quite a bit” to “deliver ridiculously fancy clothing to them.”
As for whether any of this could translate into an actual life of crime, Hamm shut that down fast.

“I was raised Catholic and would have to confess immediately,” he said.
