Jamie Lee Curtis tearfully revealed that she became a grandmother less than one week after her friends Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner died.
“The truth is that the greatest lessons [and] the hardest days ever in my life have been being a parent, and now a grandparent,” Curtis, 67, said during the Wednesday, April 1, episode of Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson’s “IMO” podcast. “My husband and I became grandparents to our eldest daughter and her husband.”
Curtis and her husband, Christopher Guest, are parents of daughters Annie, 39, and Ruby, 30. Annie has been married to Jason Wolf since 2019, while Ruby and partner Kynthia exchanged vows in 2022.
“Their baby boy was born in December, and it was a week after Rob and Michele [died], and Rob and Michele are her godparents,” Curtis tearfully said of Annie’s newborn. “They died on her birthday. My beautiful daughter, who loved them as we all did, managed to be able to metabolize that grief and sadness … [and then] brought their son into this world a week later.”
Rob and Michele died in late December 2025 at the ages of 78 and 70, respectively. The couple’s son Nick was arrested in connection to his parents’ killings but pleaded not guilty and is currently awaiting trial. (Rob and Michele also share son Jake and daughter Romy.)
As for Curtis, she counted Rob and Michele as “close friends” and grieved their deaths while celebrating her growing family.
“[It is an example of] life on life’s harshest terms and life on life’s most beautiful terms,” Curtis said. “I never thought I’d have children. I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be a grandma. A granny. I want to be Granny, but it has just been an extraordinary connection.”
Curtis and Guest, 78, hadn’t previously revealed that they have a grandson.
“We never talked about it. It’s been a private matter,” she said. “In our circle, many people know that we’re grandparents. One of these days, somebody [was] gonna say something, and I am getting to say it [first].”
Curtis ultimately received Annie’s blessing to share her baby news on Obama’s podcast.
“I called my daughter and said, ‘You know, I’m about to do this thing, I think it’s gonna come up. How would you feel about me talking about it?’ She said, ‘Tell her I love her,’” Curtis tearfully added to the former first lady, 62. “You are loved and so respected that she would say, ‘Yes, Mom, you can talk about it to Michelle Obama ‘cause she’s a G … and because you represented love in the world and you brought love to the White House and beyond.’”
Curtis added, “It’s really thrilling to me that the first time I’m going to say to the universe that I became a granny is here with you and that she said that I could do it because it was you because of what you’ve represented to her and her generation of young women.”
