James Van Der Beek dealt with significant financial strain before his death from stage III colorectal cancer at age 48 in February 2026.
The former Dawson’s Creek actor and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, shared six children — daughters Olivia, Annabel, Emilia and Gwendolyn and sons Joshua and Jeremiah — so they were forced to deal with the harsh reality of unexpected medical bills on top of the already expensive costs of caring for a family of eight.
James organized multiple fundraising benefits for families facing cancer — including his own — while his Dawson’s Creek costar Michelle Williams put together a star-studded cast reunion at Broadway’s famed Richard Rodgers Theater in September 2025 to raise money for her friend. James was unable to attend the event in person but did send a video message thanking fans and friends for their support.
In the final weeks of his life, James started selling some of his personal memorabilia from Varsity Blues and Dawson’s Creek to help offset the cost of cancer treatment.
A spokesperson for the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to Luxury Handbag Shopping on February 11, 2026, that James was pronounced dead at 6:44 a.m. that morning. A few hours later, his wife, Kimberly, launched a GoFundMe to help her family navigate an “uncertain future” without James.

James Van Der Beek Couldn’t Rely on ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Residuals
James Van Der Beek spoke about how he received no income from Dawson’s Creek reruns or streaming deals because of his original contract for the show.
“There was no residual money,” he revealed to Today in 2012. “I was 20. It was a bad contract. I saw almost nothing from that.”

As a result, James learned to be less high-minded about the acting jobs he accepted.
“You are incredibly fortunate whatever success falls on you, which is what happened with me,” he said. “But as soon as that happens, I think there is a tendency to feel like you have something to lose. Or something to protect. That can often lead to taking yourself a little too seriously.”
James went on, “It is very easy if you have all the money in the world to just sit back and coast. But if you realized that you are going to have to start providing for yourself and for your family, it really forces you to buckle down.”
James Van Der Beek Sold Replica ‘Varsity Blues’ Jerseys to Help Raise Money
The Dawson’s Creek alum went public with his stage III colorectal cancer in November 2024. (He was diagnosed in August 2023.)
“I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” James Van Der Beek told People at the time. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”
That same month, James released fundraising merchandise tied to the 25th anniversary of his 1999 movie Varsity Blues. He started selling limited-edition autographed West Canaan Coyotes football jerseys for his Varsity Blues character, Jonathon “Mox” Moxon.
“100% of my net proceeds will go to families recovering from the financial burden of cancer (including my own 😇),” James confirmed at the time.
The limited-edition football jerseys sold out quickly.
Michelle Williams Organized a ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Benefit for James Van Der Beek
Michelle Williams organized a Dawson’s Creek script reading and cast reunion to benefit both James Van Der Beek’s family and the nonprofit F Cancer. The Dawson’s Creek Class Reunion was held at the historic Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway on September 22, 2025, with Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Busy Philipps among the Dawson’s Creek alumni to join Michelle on stage.
Unfortunately, James announced one day before the Dawson’s Creek Class Reunion that he’d have to skip it because he’d come down with two stomach viruses. He was replaced for the Dawson’s Creek script reading by Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
“This is the evening I’d been looking forward to MOST since my angel Michelle Williams said she was putting it together, way back in January… So you can imagine how gutted I was when two stomach viruses conspired to knock me out of commission and keep me grounded at the worst possible moment,” he wrote via Instagram on September 21, 2025. “Despite every effort … I won’t get to be there. I won’t get to stand on that stage and thank every soul in the theater for showing up for me, and against cancer, when I needed it most.”
James then teased, “I DO have an understudy. A ridiculously overqualified replacement who would have been #1 on my wishlist (had I ever dreamed he’d be available). Someone my kids would definitely consider an upgrade over me. Everyone please enjoy all the love in that room. Shine some on my family. I will be beaming and receiving from afar in a bed in Austin.”
Michelle, Katie and Joshua opened the benefit by sharing a video message that James recorded at his home in Austin, Texas.
“I can’t believe I’m not there,” he said in the prerecorded message. “I can’t believe I don’t get to hug my castmates, my beautiful cast, in person, and I just wanted to stand on that stage and thank every single person in this theater for being here tonight — from the cast to the crew to everybody who donated their time and has been so generous. And especially every single last one of you. You’re the best fans in the world. Thank you for coming.”
James Van Der Beek Auctioned His Personal Memorabilia
Weeks before his February 2026 death, James Van Der Beek started selling some of his personal memorabilia — including cleats and hats worn on the Varsity Blues set — through auctioneer Propstore to help offset medical costs associated with his cancer treatment.
An auction held on December 5, 2025, in London featured the necklace Dawson gave Joey for prom and James’ actual flannel shirt from the Dawson’s Creek pilot. The fundraiser raised more than $47,000 to support the Van Der Beek family, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Speaking to People, James admitted that it was tough to accept that he’d have to sell memorabilia from his career to keep his family afloat.
“I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now,” he conceded. “While I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years.”
Paul Walter Hauser Stepped in to Help James Van Der Beek
Cobra Kai star Paul Walter Hauser revealed a limited-time partnership with Cameo in January 2026 to raise $20,000 for James Van Der Beek and his family.
“James Van Der Beek started selling his old stuff from his past acting jobs to pay for his colorectal cancer treatments, and it didn’t sit well with me,” Hauser explained via Instagram at the time. “I am an actor and father of 3 children, and I want them inheriting my trinkets/wardrobe/memorabilia someday. I wouldn’t want to auction off a Stingray shirt or Marvel script to make ends meet for treatment.”
He encouraged fans to “spread the love” by “spreading the word” about the fundraiser while also preempting any criticism that he was raising money for a celebrity.
“Before the Internet trolls wipe their saliva and attack their keyboards to question why I chose to raise money for this, and not something they deem worthy of time/efforts/funding, know that I’ve done stand up comedy for Relay for Life’s Cancer Charity Walk, I’ve donated my own earnings to organizations like Smile Train and Neighborly, and recently helped raise over $100,000 for ServeLA through my appearance on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” Hauser pointed out.
Hauser set a goal of raising $20,000 on Cameo by March 1, 2026, though James died on February 11, 2026. By that time, Hauser was more than halfway to his goal with $14,600 in earnings.
Following news of his friend’s death, Hauser shared a poignant memorial message via Instagram.
“Love you, James,” he wrote. “I know you’re in Heaven being pampered with love. The Van Der Beeks will be in our daily prayers and we’ll be drumming up some money to support your beautiful family. Thanks for the body of work and for being one of the good guys.”
James Van Der Beek’s Wife Launched a GoFundMe
The Van Der Beek family announced on February 11, 2026, that James had died at age 48 following a two-and-a-half-year battle with colorectal cancer.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” a statement read. “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Hours later, his wife, Kimberly, launched a GoFundMe in hopes of raising $550,000 so her six children wouldn’t lose their home.
“The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds,” the fundraiser’s description read. “They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”
As of publication, the fundraiser had raised more than $390,000.
