A new documentary series streaming now on Prime Video is pulling back the curtain on one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

“Esports World Cup: Level Up,” a five-part series directed by Emmy-winner R.J. Cutler, takes viewers behind the scenes of the inaugural Esports World Cup (EWC) 2024 — a global tournament where 1,500 of the world’s top players competed for more than $60 million in prize money and the title of world’s number one esports club.

The series, produced by This Machine, part of Sony Pictures Television, offers an inside look at the high-stakes competition and the personal journeys of the players involved. New episodes will roll out weekly, capturing the intensity, passion and challenges faced by competitors in this emerging global sport.

“What drew me to the Esports World Cup was the compelling human stories unfolding within this high-stakes arena,” said Cutler. “‘Level Up’ isn’t just about the incredible competition and prize money; it’s about the dedication, the passion, and the sheer will of these athletes and teams pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Under high pressure, we discover the true character of the competitors who vie for $60 million, but who also expose their humanity in the process.”

At the center of the story is the EWC Club Championship, a multi-title tournament where Clubs compete across more than 20 games, earning points toward a single leaderboard. The format is designed to crown an all-around champion in a sport where individual games often dominate the spotlight.

“A win might make the headlines — but the real story is the people behind it,” said Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation. “‘Level Up’ dives into the human side of esports: the pressure, the ambition, the sacrifices. It’s about what it really takes to compete at the highest level — and why it matters. R.J. is the best at bringing those stories to life, and this one captures the heart of what we’re building.”

The inaugural EWC was held in Riyadh, with the 2025 event set to kick off in the same city on July 7, running through Aug. 24. This year’s event will feature a record-breaking $70 million prize pool. The tournament will also see global football icon Cristiano Ronaldo serve as its new Global Ambassador.

One storyline featured in ‘Level Up’ follows Team Falcons’ Warzone trio, led by California-based competitor Soka, as they vie for a $1 million prize and global recognition. Other narratives trace players confronting old rivalries and personal hurdles, highlighting the human drama behind the gaming screens.

“Esports World Cup: Level Up” is available exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. New episodes drop each Friday, and all five episodes will be available to binge starting July 4.
