Apparently we’ve all forgotten how to celebrate. Turns out, Americans are gathering 70% less than we were a generation ago. We’ve convinced ourselves we’re too busy, too out of practice, or just plain bad at hosting. Woodford Reserve, the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, decided Derby 152 was the perfect moment to change that — and Charleston was the perfect place to start.

On Wednesday, March 25, the iconic Kentucky bourbon and presenting sponsor of the Kentucky Derby took over Charleston’s stunning Dewberry Hotel for an evening of Derby Celebration Training — and let’s just say the guest list did not disappoint.

Southern Charm alum Landon Clements joined a room full of fashion and lifestyle tastemakers including Rachel Martino, Noelle Downing, Sabine Laventure, Clara Peirce, and Sadie Loving — plus Charleston insiders and national press.

Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, the first woman ever to hold that title at the brand, walked an intimate group of tastemakers through the bourbon’s full cocktail versatility — proving that whether you’re keeping it classic with a Mint Julep or getting creative, Woodford Reserve is the bottle that anchors every Derby bar. At the same time legendary Charleston event duo Tara Guérard and Erica Cain Missel of Soirée spilled their secrets for hosting a Derby celebration your guests will actually talk about. Tips include:
1. Build a Signature Woodford Reserve Bourbon Bar
Mint julep cups are a must for authentic Derby vibes.
Crushed ice is essential—it’s the key to a proper mint julep.
Elevate Woodford Reserve Original Kentucky Bourbon on the rocks with decorative ice cubes, like red rose ice cubes, for a festive touch.
2. Serve with Style (and Practicality)
Classic silver trays are traditional, but dinner plates work just as well if trays aren’t available.
Offer bite-sized, grab-and-go appetizers and stick to cocktail napkins only—no plates or forks needed.
This approach keeps things elegant and makes cleanup easier for the host.
3. Set the Scene
Bluegrass music instantly sets the tone and delivers authentic Kentucky Derby ambiance.
Candles aren’t necessary for daytime events; consider them only if the gathering extends past 6 p.m.
4. Keep Guests Engaged
Create a simple betting game and designate a comfortable, visible area for watching the race—this keeps energy high and guests involved.
5. Plan the Bar by Guest Count
For 20 guests or fewer, a self-serve “make your own” bar works beautifully.
For larger gatherings, hiring a bartender is highly recommended—keeping ice stocked and drinks flowing can quickly overwhelm the host.
And if that wasn’t enough, Derby 152 bottle artist Anna Murphy unveiled her stunning Art In Bloom collection inspired by her Woodford Reserve Derby 152 bottle artwork. “My collection, Art In Bloom, is an extension of my own creative world, transforming original artwork into wearable expressions inspired by nature, beauty, and the blooming garden within,” Anna says. For the detail that takes a Derby look from great to unforgettable, look no further than a custom pin. Charleston-based accessories brand Brackish — known for their handcrafted feather bow ties and jewelry made from sustainably sourced natural materials — was also on-site crafting custom feather pins for Derby hats and lapels. It’s a one-of-a-kind finishing touch and the perfect way to add personality to any race day outfit.

A live bluegrass band kept the energy going. Because honestly? If you’re going to teach people how to celebrate, you may as well show them exactly how it’s done.
Consider us trained. Derby 152, we’re ready for you.
