New details are being revealed about what led to Chase Stokes and Kelsea Ballerini’s latest split.
“Ever since they split the first few times, the dynamic totally shifted and it was never the same,” a source exclusively tells Luxury Handbag Shopping. “Something felt a little more off this time around, almost like they were forcing things again.”
The insider shares that Stokes and Ballerini “never really got back to how it was in the beginning.”
“Kelsea’s career has been more demanding recently, and had caused distance, which was an issue at one point,” the source shares. “The allure and excitement of the relationship wore off and there were also too many ongoing trust issues that Kelsea can’t get past. She didn’t fully trust him, which sucked.”
Ballerini was the one who decided to end her romance with Stokes this go-round, the insider adds. “It wasn’t dramatic, just felt like she knew this wasn’t forever and didn’t want to waste their time,” the source says.
Luxury Handbag Shopping reached out to Ballerini and Stokes’ reps for comment.
Ballerini and Stokes began dating in 2023 before splitting late last year. While ringing in the new year, the pair revealed that they rekindled their romance.
“Messy year for the heart, messy year for the outside coming in, messy year for the way it became an out of our hands portrayal of it,” Ballerini wrote via her Instagram Story on December 31, 2025. “But what I’ll say, and all I really care to share indefinitely with my personal life anymore, is that I really love love. I believe in it, I believe in him, and I believe in breaking patterns. Now go kiss your person and stop speculating.”
Stokes, meanwhile, penned a separate post while confirming their reconciliation. “Something I’ve learned this year: don’t take advantage of the most beautiful things that in 33 years of life are fleeting,” he wrote. “Take accountability, learn from mistakes. Lean into love and say it often. 2026 my year of growth, my year of truth. Starting here, starting now. Happy new years ❤️.”
Earlier this month, Ballerini reflected on her separation from Stokes.
“I feel like outwardly, it looked a lot more dramatic than it was,” Ballerini told Entertainment Tonight at the 2026 Grammy Awards. “And that was quite the learning lesson for us. But I love him so much. We’ve been together for quite a while now and done a lot of life together, and he was with me getting ready today, and he’ll be with me when we wrap.”
She continued, “I love love, and I believe in it. And also, I believe so much in finding the things that make you happy and finding the things that you want to work on and figuring out, when the rubber meets the road, how to make that work.”
In a separate interview, Ballerini noted that she’s “always been a chronic oversharer” but decided she needs to be “reigning it in.”
“I think my life might just be my life for a while. It feels right,” Ballerini told E! Live from the Red Carpet that same night, noting that she learned “a lot” while making her album Patterns. “I’ve been such a chronic people pleaser for my whole life and most of my career. I think I’m starting to shift that in a healthy way.”
