Aubrey Plaza has been candid about navigating her love life with a career in the spotlight.
“You need to just get out there and meet whoever you want, whoever you can,” Plaza told Bumble in a 2021 YouTube video. “If someone makes you laugh, you see something funny, say ‘hi,’ and try it out.”
The Parks and Recreation alum dated filmmaker Jeff Baena from 2011 until they got married in 2020. Baena died by suicide five years later in January 2025 at the age of 47, months after separating from Plaza.
“Overall, I’m here, and I’m functioning, and I feel grateful to be moving through the world,” Plaza said on the “Good Hang” podcast in August 2025. “I think, like, I’m OK, but it’s a daily struggle, obviously.”
Plaza opened up about her grief while referencing Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy’s horror movie, The Gorge.
“In the movie, there’s a cliff on one side and a cliff on the other side, and there’s a gorge in between and it’s filled with all these monster people that are trying to get them,” she explained. “When I watched it, I was like, that feels like what my grief is like. … Where it’s like, at all times, there’s like a giant ocean of awfulness that’s, like, right there, and I can see it, and sometimes I just wanna dive into it and be in it. And then, sometimes, I just look at it, and sometimes I just try to get away from it.”
Less than one year later, Plaza found love again with Chris Abbott. News broke in April 2026 that she is pregnant with their first baby.

Michael Cera
Aubrey Plaza dated Michael Cera after they met on the set of 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
“I dated him for a long time,” Plaza said on the “What’s the Tea” podcast in 2016, noting the two actors were together for “a year and a half.”
She added, “We love each other, and we’re still really good friends. He’s just a weird little freak, and we speak the same language.”
Cera, for his part, told Rolling Stone in 2023 that he nearly married Plaza.
“We were driving through Vegas, and we almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married,” he recalled. “I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at like … 20.”
Cera actually married a woman named Nadine in 2018 before they welcomed a son in 2022.
Jeff Baena
Aubrey Plaza began dating Jeff Baena in 2011, going on to become frequent film collaborators. They worked together on Life After Beth, Joshy, Spin Me Round and The Little Hours.
“As I’ve made more and more stuff, I’ve come to appreciate everything that she brings,” Baena told Newsweek in 2022. “She’s insanely talented and so smart and obviously really good at producing, and she’s writing. There are very few people who can wear as many hats as her, as elegantly as she does.”
After nearly a decade together, Plaza and Baena tied the knot during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
“A lot of things happened during COVID for me. Yes, we got married. Big deal,” Plaza said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in December 2021. “We got a little bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. … I created a very quick love altar in our yard.”

“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” Plaza’s rep told Us in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
A medical examiner report later revealed that Plaza and Baena separated in September 2024. Neither star publicly addressed the breakup before Baena’s death.
Chris Abbott
Chris Abbott and Aubrey Plaza started dating in late 2025. They previously costarred in the movie Black Bear (2020) and the off-Broadway play Danny and the Deep Blue Sea (2023).
Abbott and Plaza were first spotted together in July 2025, less than a year before revealing that they are expecting a baby.
