Inside Josh Duhamel and Fergie's Coparenting Timeline While Raising Son Axl After Divorce

Josh Duhamel and Fergie called it quits in 2017 and have been amicably raising their son, Axl, ever since. Duhamel and Fergie welcomed their son in August 2013, six months after announcing their pregnancy. Four years later, the duo announced their separation after eight years of marriage in a joint statement. "With absolute love and respect, we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year,” the exes told Luxury Handbag Shopping in September 2017. "To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.” Fergie and Duhamel’s divorce was finalized in 2019. During the divorce proceedings, Duhamel moved on with Audra Mari. The former soap star called his ex-wife a "great mom" in an E! News interview, adding, "[Coparenting] is going really well. All we want is the best for our son, so it's a bit of a juggling act but we're both grown-ups who can handle a lot. And he's happy. That's the main thing."

Duhamel opened up about how he learned lessons on coparenting from his own divorced parents. “My parents never figured it out,” he shared in an interview with Fatherly. “And who it hurt was us. Not to bag on my parents, because they’re civil now, but they don’t go out of their way to talk to each other. I’m like, ‘It’s been 40 years. Get your s--t together.’ But they don’t have the tools. And I’m OK with that.”

He continued: “Fergie, she was very much 'No matter what, we have to be civil for Axl,'" stating that his ex was "very adamant about not letting [Axl] meet people I was dating until we'd been dating for six months or something."

After Duhamel and Mari announced that they are expecting their first baby together, Fergie congratulated the couple on their happy news. “I am truly happy for you guys,” the singer commented on their social media announcement. “Axl can’t wait to be a big brother.”

“I made peace with that part of my life. She and I have a great relationship. There wasn’t anything wrong with it. We had a great time,” Duhamel said of his dynamic with Fergie during a sit down on In Depth With Graham Bensinger. “I think we kind of outgrew each other and had very different interests. The older I got the more I wanted to come back here [to North Dakota]. I’ve got no hard feelings for it. I’m very lucky that she’s a kind human.”

Furthermore, Duhamel said he and Fergie have always been in sync when it comes to raising their son. “We both had parents who got divorced who didn’t get along so great and didn’t want to do the same thing to our kid. [We] had to be a positive example for Axl,” he explained. “We just both wanted the same thing — and that is to create an easy place for him that isn’t awkward or uncomfortable or pressure-filled.”

March 2026

Fergie showed support for Duhamel and Mari when the couple announced their pregnancy with baby No. 2.

“Welcome the cuteness! 💖💖,” the singer commented on the announcement. 

That same month, Duhamel made a few rare comments about his relationship with Fergie, both before and after their divorce. 

“Fergie is also very wholesome, believe it or not,” he said on “The Skinny Confidential” podcast. “She’s a great mom. Very kind, very nonconfrontational, thank God. We have a good relationship. She and Audra have a great relationship.”

Recalling why their marriage ended, Duhamel continued, “We’re just very different. Fergie and I, we just have different views of the world. And that’s OK, you know. But I have no regrets about that. We have a beautiful son. But [Fergie and Mari are] just very different in a lot of ways. But also, both really great women. They really are.”

During an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show, Duhamel said he felt like he was “in [Fergie’s] shadow” during their marriage. 

“It’s probably my own ego more than anything. I don’t think it bugged her as much as it probably did me. But she was a massive star at the time!” he noted.

The Ransom Canyon star added, “We parent our son, Axl. She’s a great mom. I’m extremely happily married now to my wife, Audra. We have a beautiful son and a little girl on the way. [Audra and Fergie] have a great relationship, which is what I really care about. I want to make sure everybody is just copacetic. I just want peace and I don’t want any in-fighting between anybody. They’ve been very civil, thankfully, in the way they approach this thing. … It could be ugly but, thankfully, it’s not.”
